Title: Lesson 1: Length
1Metric Measuring
- Lesson 1 Length
- Lesson 2
- Mass
2An IntroductionTo the Metric Measuring System
of Length
3Metric Units
The Smallest unit of measurement in the metric
system is the Millimeter--the small and medium
lines.
It takes 10 Millimeters (mm) to make 1 Centimeter
(cm)
4Question 1How many Millimeters in one centimeter?
5Answer 1It takes 10 milimeters to make one
centimeter
6Metric Units
The Smallest unit of measurement in the metric
system is the is the Millimeter--the small and
medium lines.
It takes 10 Millimeters (mm) to make 1 Centimeter
(cm)
7Question 2What do you think the medium sized
lines measure?
8Metric Units
The medium lines are identified by the yellow
arrows
Answer
The medium lines break the centimeters into half
centimeters or 5-milimeter segments, they also
mark milimeters
91-Centimeter (cm) 10-Milimeters (mm)
1-Milimeter There are 10 millimeters in 1
Centimeter
1-Centimeter The distance between the two arrows,
and the length of the yellow line.
CM
MM
10Question 3Which measurement is smaller one
millimeter or one centimeter?
11Answer 3The millimeter is smaller. It takes 10
millimeters to make one Centimeter
12Question 4How many Millimeters in one centimeter?
13Answer 4It takes 10 millimeters to make one
Centimeter?
14Reading Metric Measurements
For todays lesson you will mark the number of
centimeters followed by the millimeters and then
convert the millimeters into a decimal
Example for the blue line we count the
centimeters first.
The next thing we do is add the millimeters.
4cm
Can you identify the second measurement?
15Reading Metric Measurements
4cm
and 3 mm
The last step we do is to add the two together
and convert them into decimal form
4cm 3 mm 4.3 cm
16Reading Metric Measurements
You can say that one mm is equal to 1/10 th of a
cm. and we read it as a decimal 0.1
This measurement is 4 3/10 th cm - Or as a
decimal 4.3 cm
Can you identify the second measurement?
17Reading Metric Measurements
You can say that one mm is equal to 1/10 th of a
cm. and we read it as a decimal 0.1
Can you name the red arrows value in decimal form?
First add up the centimeters
6 centimeters
3 Millimeters
Second add up the millimeters
Finally we add them together and convert into
decimal form
6 cm 3 mm 6.3 cm
18Now!
For your lab, you must do the same three steps
for each of the measurements.
- Count the Centimeters first
2) Count the Millimeters second
3) And finally add them together and put them in
decimal form
10 centimeters 5 millimeters 10.5 centimeters
