Title: Rituals and Passages

1
Rituals and Passages
  • Rituals are simply a formalized structure around
an act or event that is designed to emphasize the
significance. Often symbolism is part of the
act/event and the ritual is designed to focus or
    emphasize this.
  • The ritual shown in the following couple of
images was the end of a relationship. The scrolls
were either actual items or symbols of things
that were part of the past to be cleansed by
fire. Even the colours of the sticks making the
funeral pyre were symbolic. After the items were
burned, the sea came in and washed everything
    clean.
  • Rituals can celebrate or be cathartic and healing.

Passages
  • All of these major life passages are points of
transition from one state into another. They
mark, celebrate or ease the transition either for
those involved or for others connected to the
    event.
  • Adolescence is the transition from childhood to
adulthood and cultural rituals around this are
markers around this event that recognize the
    changed status.
  • The Passages Project asks you to make an art
piece around a point of transition in your life
some event that was significant in some way. This
does not have to be a ritual and can take any
    form.
  • Following are some images of past SFU Passages
projects and from High School students doing a
version based strictly on adolesence, their
current passage in essence a self portrait.
  • Do not view these images until you have explored
    your own ideas.
