What is Disaster Management

• Discipline dealing with and avoiding risks
• Involves preparing, supporting, and rebuilding
  society when natural or man made disasters occur
• Continuous process by which all individuals,
  groups, and communities manage hazards in an
  effort to avoid or ameliorate the impact of
  disasters resulting from the hazards

History of Natural Disasters in Sri Lanka

• Floods, droughts, Landslides, cyclones and
  coastal erosions are frequent occurrence
• Floods are the frequent event during the
  southwest and northeast monsoon.
• In 2003 floods and landslides occur in large
  scale
• In 2004 December Tsunami causes a severe damage.
  
• Above facts focuses that Sri Lanka is disaster
  prone community.

National plans for Disaster Mitigation

• Tsunami has proved the necessity of Disaster
  Risk Management Legislation in Sri Lanka
• Sri Lanka Parliament Passed the Sri Lanka
  Disaster Management Act No 13 of 2005.
• National council for Disaster Management NCDM was
  established as per the act
