Title: Matter

1
Matter

2
Matter
  • Matter is anything that takes up space.
  • Every object that takes up space is made of
    matter.

3
What Makes Up Matter?
  • Matter is made of tiny particles you cannot see
    called atoms.
  • These atoms join together to form bigger
    particles of matter.
  • These larger particles join together to form the
    matter that you can see.

4
Examples of Matter
  • A book is matter.
  • Steam is matter.
  • We are matter.

5
Physical Properties of Matter
  • How it looks dull, colorful, bright, shiny,
    small. . .
  • How it feels soft, hard, fuzzy, smooth, rough.
    . .
  • How it smells sweet, horrible, no smell. . .
  • How it sounds loud, soft, no sound. . .
  • What it does sticks, freezes, bounces, rips,
    breaks. . .

6
States of Matter
  • Solid
  • Liquid
  • Gas

7
SOLID
  • A solid has definite shape and does not lose its
    shape.
  • A solids a solid.
  • It doesnt change shape.
  • It cant move around
  • It stays in one place.
  • Your desk is a solid
  • And so is your chair.
  • Just look in your classroom
  • Wow! Theyre everywhere!

8
LIQUID
  • A liquid takes the shape of any container. It
can change shape in different containers.
  • A liquid moves smoothly.
  • We say that it flows
  • From one place to another
  • How quickly it goes!
  • We know that most liquids
  • Are easy to see.
  • With no shape of their own,
  • Theyre not like you and me.

9
GAS
  • A gas does not have a definite shape and takes up
    all space in a container.
  • Air is a gas.
  • We cant see it, thats true
  • But often we feel it
  • In things that we do.
  • It keeps up a kite.
  • Air fills up a bubble.
  • Without it to breathe,
  • We would be in BIG trouble.

10
Measuring Matter
  • A thermometer is used to measure the temperature
    of matter.

11
Mass
  • Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
  • A balance is used to measure mass.

12
Magnification
  • We magnify objects to see what smaller parts make
    up the object.

13
MATTER
  • Matter is everywhere.
  • Matter is made of smaller particles joined
    together.
  • Physical properties of matter are how it looks,
feels, sounds, smells, and what it does.
  • Matter can be measured.
  • Some matter can change shape.
