Title: Overview
1Overview
This presentation will help you install NetNote
in your office. You will learn how to install
NetNote, but also NetNote Server (to send notes
across your network). There are more interactive
presentation on our site (www.alshare.com) to
show you the power of NetNote (including sending
notes across your network, using the send
options, improve your productivity with the
models, installing a CallerID box and the
CallerID Plug-In,)
2Step 1 Choosing the Server
One of the most interesting features of NetNote
is that you can send notes across your LAN.
NetNote uses a server in order to distribute
these sent notes. Here are some tips to help you
setting up your NetNote communications
- Only one of your PC has to run the NetNote
server. - Almost any PC could do that, but here are some
tips to help you choose the best suited PC - Choose a PC that stays ON most of the time your
NetNotes will not be able to communicate between
each other if the server is not running - If you have the choice, choose a PC running
Windows NT / 2000 / XP rather than one running
Windows 95 / 98 / Me. - - Choose a PC that everybody on your LAN has
access to.
? OS NT/W2000/XP? Always ON?
Choose the most appropriate PC to run the NetNote
Server
3Step 2 Installing the Server (1/3)
Once you know which PC will run NetNote Server,
download the installation and launch it
You can get the NetNote Server installation by
downloading a functional demo version on our site
(Download Server demo here). If you are a
registered user, please use the download link
provided in the registration mail. There is also
a demo version provided with the NetNote client.
You can use it if you have already installed
NetNote on the PC youll use as
server. The installation is pretty
straightforward and the only options are the
installation folder and the creation of some
desktop shortcuts.

4Step 2 Installing the Server (2/3)
Once you know which PC will run NetNote Server,
download the installation and launch it
On the last step of the installation, leave the
option launch the server now checked. The
server will also be launched automatically each
time you boot your PC.
The only visible clue of the server is a small
red icon in the taskbar
Install NetNote Server on the PC you chose
and launch it
5Step 2 Installing the Server (3/3)
The Server must be running to exchange notes
across your network. NetNote will display an
error message if you try to send a note with no
Server running on your network.
Install NetNote Server on the PC you chose
and launch it
From now on, NetNote Server should always be
running on that PC
6Step 3 Installing NetNote (1/3)
Now that the Server is up and running, install
NetNote on all your PC.
You can always get the latest NetNote version by
downloading it on our site (Download NetNote
here). Like with the Server, the NetNote
installation is pretty straightforward and the
only options are the installation folder and the
creation of some desktop shortcuts. Dont
forget to install NetNote on the PC you just
used for NetNote Server The server only acts
as a relay and then does not incorporate the
client functionalities. For example you cannot
create a note on a PC with only the Server on it.

7Step 3 Installing NetNote (2/3)
Once NetNote is installed, launch it! The first
time you run it, it will ask you a two questions
your name and on which PC NetNote Server is
installed.
The name you enter is used to identify this
NetNote on the network When you send a note,
NetNote displays all the NetNote users he is
aware of. And these users are identified by this
name value. The Server IP address is the IP
address of the PC you just chose to install the
server on. If you know the address you can type
it directly in the edit field. But you can also
ask NetNote to list all the PC on your network.
You will learn more about that feature on the
next page. The Port number should not be
changed except if the default IP port (6123) is
not acceptable on your network. If you change it,
please be sure you change it on all your PC and
on the Server! If something is wrong with the
installation, youll get an Connection error
message when you validate that window please
consult the troubleshooting section later in that
document.

and launch them!
8Step 3 Installing NetNote (3/3)
NetNote helps you finding the IP address of the
PC you used as the NetNote Server. Just click on
the Search for a server on your network button
NetNote lists all the PC he sees around
him. For each found PC, he displays the computer
name and the IP address. When you find the PC
you used as the NetNote Server PC, select it and
press the OK button. That closes this window and
automatically fills the Server IP address field
in the initialization window. If the PC you
used as server does not appear, click on the
Cancel button and enter the IP address
manually. If you dont know that address, go on
that Server PC, click on the red NetNote Server
icon the IP address is displayed on the bottom
left of the Server window.
Install NetNote on all your PC
and launch them!
Ask NetNote to help you finding the Server PC
9Step 4 Test the connection (1/2)
Now that the installation is done and both the
Server and the NetNotes are running, lets verify
the connection between your NetNotes.
The first test is to see which NetNote the Server
identifies. Go on the Server PC and click on the
red NetNote Server icon to display the Server
window (see the snapshot on the left). The
critical area to look for is the Connected users
list. Verify that all your NetNote users are
listed there. If all your users are listed as
connected, you can jump to the second test (see
next page). If no user appear or some are
missing, please consult the troubleshooting
section later in that document.
10Step 4 Test the connection (2/2)
Now that the installation is done and both the
Server and the NetNotes are running, lets verify
the connection between your NetNotes.
- The second test is to see if each NetNotes sees
the others. - Go on each PC and do the following test
- Create a blank note (double-click on the yellow
NetNote icon in the taskbar) or select any
existing note. - Click on the Send button
- In the window that appears, verify you see all
the other users in the list. - Please also verify they appear with a green icon
in front of them (meaning they are connected and
ready to communicate). - If no user appear or some are missing, please
consult the troubleshooting section later in that
document. - If all is OK, you can send that note to other
users and verify it was received correctly
everywhere.
11Congratulations!
NetNote is now ready to be used on your
network! If this is your first experience with
our products, you can learn more by browsing our
other interactive presentations (on our site
www.alshare.com ). They will show you the power
of NetNote (including sending notes across your
network, using the send options, improve your
productivity with the models, installing a
CallerID box and the CallerID Plug-In,). If
you had connection troubles, please continue
reading that document.
12Troubleshooting guide
If you have some connection problems (cannot send
notes, dont see some recipients,), here is a
action list you should go through to resolve your
problem.
1 - Verify that your Server and all your
NetNotes are running (red and yellow Post-it icon
in the tray bar) 2 - Are communication
restricted on your network (firewall, protection
software)? 3 - Check what you have in the
"Connected users" list (NetNote Server) 4 - For
each NetNote not found in the connected list,
please check these following points
- Check Server IP address
- Verify the communications are enabled
- Do you get a "Connection error" message?
All these points are detailed in the following
pages.
13Troubleshooting guide Are NetNote and the
Server running?
The first check is to verify that both your
NetNotes and the NetNote Server are running.
This is the icon you should see in the Taskbar of
each PC you installed NetNote on. You should
also try to create a blank note (double click on
this icon).
This is the icon you should see in the Taskbar of
the PC were you installed the NetNote server.
14Troubleshooting guide Restricted communications
The second check is to verify that your firewall,
your router or your anti-virus does not block the
communications between your NetNotes and the
NetNote Server.
- The default IP port used by NetNote to
communicate is 6123. - Even if most routers and firewall dont block
communications inside a LAN, you still have to
make sure no application or equipment block that
port. - However, here is a way to change the port used by
NetNote - Open the NetNote Server window ()
- Click on the Change port number button
- Modify the port and validate
- Stop and restart the Server
- On each NetNote, open the Option window () and
select the Communication tab - Change the Port
- Click on OK.
- () Right click on the red NetNote Server icon
in the Taskbar. - () Right click on the yellow NetNote icon in
the Taskbar, click on the Option menu item.
15Troubleshooting guide The Server Connected
users list
The NetNote Server maintains a list of the
currently connected users. You should normally
see all your NetNote users in that list.
If a user does not appear in the Connected list
but do appear in the Disconnected list, it
means that this user has once been connected but
is now offline. However, if some user dont
appear in one of the two lists, it means that
this user has never been able to connect to the
server. You should then run the tests described
in the next pages of that guide. The last case
is two empty lists. It means no communication at
all between the Server and your NetNotes. Please
then also run the test the tests described in
the next pages of that guide. Before
continuing the tests, please write down the
Server IP address.
16Troubleshooting guide NetNote communication
parameters
You should now check the communication parameters
of each NetNote that does not appear in the
Server Connected users list.
First, lets open the Option window () and
select the Communication tab. Then, verify the
communications are enabled. Now, check that the
Server IP address is the same as the one you just
wrote down (while checking the connected users on
the Server see the previous step). You can
always use the Search for a server on your
network button. When you are sure of your
configuration, click on the OK button and jump to
the next step of that guide. () Right click
on the yellow NetNote icon in the Taskbar, click
on the Option menu item.
17Troubleshooting guide Communication error
message
When NetNote detects a communication problem when
it launches or after you change the option
settings, it displays a special communication
error message.
This error means that NetNote could not connect
to the NetNote Server. It does not appears
immediately after launch or after closing the
Option window, but usually only after a few
seconds. If youve done all the tests described
in the previous pages and still see this window
appear, you need to send us your log
files. Please read carefully the next page to
learn more about log files.
18Troubleshooting guide Log Files (1/3)
If you still have communication problems after
having done all the tests described in the
previous pages, please send us your log files.
- You must send the log files of the NetNote that
are not working and the Server logs. - For example, if one of your NetNote does not
communicate with the others, please send the
notes of both that PC, a working PC you try to
communicate with and the Server logs. - This page and the next ones describe a procedure
to generate useful NetNote logs. - You need first to prepare the clear the existing
logs and prepare the recording - On each NetNote you need to record
- Check all the checkboxes in the NetNote Options /
"Logs / Debug" - Press the Clear log file button
- Press the OK button
- Stop and restart NetNote
- Please continue to the next page to prepare the
Server logs
19Troubleshooting guide Log Files (2/3)
If you still have communication problems after
having done all the tests described in the
previous pages, please send us your log files.
You now need to clear the Server log file prior
to the recording. On the PC that runs the
Server, open an Explorer and locate the AlShare
NetNote Server (the default folder is C\Program
Files\AlShare\NetNote Server). Select the
NNServer.log file and delete it. Please
continue to the next page to start the recording
20Troubleshooting guide Log Files (3/3)
If you still have communication problems after
having done all the tests described in the
previous pages, please send us your log files.
- Now that youve configured both your NetNotes and
the NetNote Serve, try to reproduce the problem
you encountered. - Once youve reproduced it, please continue the
procedure - Come back to the Options / "Logs / Debug" page
- Press the "Email logs to AlShare Support" to send
the file by email - If that fails, please use the "Show log file"
button to display them - Then you can copy them to an email you send to
logs_at_alshare.comYou may then uncheck the
checkboxes in the "NetNote options" window /
"Logs / Debug" page once the problem is resolved. - You must also send the NNServer.log file located
in your NetNote Server folder (the default folder
is C\Program Files\AlShare\NetNote Server).
