Title: Jung and Freud

1
Jung and Freud
  • With emphasis on the former
  • A bit of Propp, too

2
Freud
  • Mind blank at birth
  • Unconscious filled with repressed upsurges of the
    id
  • If repression causes pathology, bring to surface
  • But repressed urges are not pure too upsetting
for that they are disguised in symbolic form
  • Therapist deciphers symbols
  • These are shared because of shared experience
  • Tales (and other material) provide symbols for
expression of that which cannot be dealt with in
    pure form

3
Jung
  • Mind not blank starts with collective
    unconscious
  • The nature/nurture debate and its political
    implications
  • Also believes in common imagery, common symbols,
but source of these is collective unconscious,
    something innate, not shared experience

4
The archetypes
  • Freud mind model unconscious is not a factor,
    except in repression
  • Jung unconscious in part of your awareness
  • But because it is unconscious, you can be aware
of it only in a certain, limited way the
    archetypes

5
The archetypes of the collective unconscious
  • Anima/animus
  • Mother
  • Child
  • Old man
  • Shadow
  • This is not a complete list
  • Structured by polar opposites
  • Variable axes
  • Examples Kali and Diana the Huntress
  • Joe Namath selling panty hose
  • Women sell mens shirts
  • Power of opposites love/hate relationships

6
Power of opposites cont.
  • In terms of understanding what people think, what
they react to emotionally, this is extremely
    important
  • A figure with contradictions is more powerful
    than a consistent (simplistic) figure
  • This principle used in commercials, MTV, films
    and other popular media
  • The Borg, Imperial Walkers
  • Dennis Rodman
  • Yours truly
  • MD who will stick fingers in various orifices

7
Opposites in talesTales teach power of opposites
  • Girl with palace surrounded by skulls
  • Disgusting seeming figure who turns out to be a
    beauty (Girl in Pigskin Cloak)
  • Animal groom belongs here too

  • Wily, wise and foolish
  • Wisdom of the child and helplessness, folly of
    the child
  • Listen to your inner child and all I needed I
    learned in Kindergarten phase
  • Trickster figure in tales the animal tales

10
Journey of integration or individuation
  • MUST be made
  • Usually at age 10 after ego established
  • Denial of unconscious like excision of organ
  • Fear of journey first archetype encountered is
    shadow
  • Shadow as negative aspects of self
  • Darth Vader as shadow
  • Encounter with DV, guidance of Yoda, in swamp
  • Excision of hand

11
Integration journey
  • Has a kind of sequence shadow first, other
    all-encompassing archetype (anima/animus) last
  • But need for MULTIPLE journeys to develop as a
    person
  • See various aspects of archetypes and thus
    various aspects of self
  • Other way to learn is projection on to the
    outside world, like family

12
Connect Jung and Propp
  • Archetypes are like dramatis personae
  • The tale as a whole (morphology, complete move)
is like a journey of integration
  • Explains sameness of tales and great diversity of
    tales
  • Implications?
