2
CGSE Problems
  • 1. Welds
  • 90 of welds are not acceptable for cryogenic
    application
  • Root Porosity (due to lack of Argon TIG)
  • Lack of penetration
  • Combination of the two
  • 2. Design Errors
  • Lack of compensators in G-He valve box and
    Cryostat
  • Vapour cooled shield (parallel instead of coil)
  • 3. Burning of cryogenic valves in L-He valve box

CGSE Repairs at CERN
  • After two meetings in the Central Workshop with
engineers and expert Welders, it was decided that
the operation of the CGSE in its state is too
    risky
  • Repair of transfer lines in B112 (ex LHC)
  • 2 expert welders from Central Workshop
  • Repair of valve boxes, cryostat and simulator in
    B180 (ex ATLAS Toroid)
  • 2 expert welders and 1 pipe fitter from STMBA, a
firm that was used by LHC cryogenics for the
repair of QRL and valve boxes

Modifications
  • Add filter into L-He valve box to remove
particles from entering the Simulator (Magnet)
during cool down to 80 K
  • Remove HX1 from cryostat
  • Replace HX2 by Heating Tapes
  • Install new vapour cooled shield into L-He valve
    box
