Title: Biometric Devices/standards/technology

1
Biometric Devices/standards/technology
2
  • Outline
  • Overview
  • Biometric market growth
  • Architecture of a Fingerprint Identification
    System
  • Commercial Hardware Products
  • Product Applications
  • References and Useful Links

3
Overview
Got mail? Portable technology ?
4
The Road Ahead
  • Market estimates put the total hardware sales for
the industry at US6.6 million in 1990 and nearly
US400 million in 2000 and over a billion in
    2005.
  • Whether the next decade will result in a
similar 2500 increase will depend upon user
    demand for positive identification biometrics.

5
Fingerprint devices
  • Fingerprint sensors can be embedded in a variety
    of
  • devices for user recognition purposes

6
A fingerprint identification system
7
Hardware Assembly
  • Authentication Module
  • User Interface (LCD)
  • Brain (FPGA board)
  • Communication (Bluetooth)
  • Secondary Module

8
Authentication Module
  • Subsystems
  • Fingerprint authentication
  • Vital Sign Verification

9
Fingerprint Module FDA01M
  • Standalone device with built-in CPU
  • CMOS sensor (complementary metal oxide
    semiconductor)
  • Resolution 500dpi
  • Power Supply 5VDC 5
  • Current Consumption lt 75mA
  • Standby Power Consumption 40mA (TYP)
  • Verification Time lt 1sec
  • Image Capture Error Rate lt 0.1
  • Dimensions 21(W) x 32 (L) x 62(H)
  • Life Time Typically 40,000Hrs

10
Pulse Oximetry
  • Blood oxygenation is measured by shining a beam
of light from an LED through a tissue bed
    (typically, the finger)
  • Extremely common for use on patients under
    anesthesia during surgery
  • Biometric system uses Pulse Oximetry to verify
that the client being authenticated is alive

11
LCD Interface
12
LCD User Interface
  • 4x20 Serial LCD with Keypad Interface
  • Communication RS232 or I2C
  • Speed RS232 mode 1200bps to 19.2 Kbps
  • Fully buffered - no delays in transmission
  • Supply Voltage 4.75 to 5.25Vdc
  • Supply Current 10mA typical
  • Backlight Supply Current 90mA typical

13
Secondary Device
  • Receives signal from primary device and activates
    the controlled device
  • Uses a switch to enable/disable power to the
    controlled device
  • Sends signals if necessary to activate the
    controlled device

14
Some Commercial Products
  • Fingerprint Door Lock (180)

15
Features
  • Unlocking Fingerprint, PIN/code or Mechanical
    Key
  • Cylindrical latch - Easy to install and simple to
    operate
  • No PC Connection Required
  • Total 138 fingerprint users
  • Fingerprint can be added and erased on the lock
    directly
  • Concealed mechanical Key override for emergency
  • No external wiring required - Operates on 4 AA
    Batteries with easy Battery Replacement

16
Some Commercial Products
  • Panasonic BM-ET300 Iris Entry System

17
Iris System
  • Panasonic BM-ET300 Iris Entry System

18
Features
  • Easy operation and management from a PC.
  • Designed for High Security.
  • Encrypted registration data.
  • Tamperproof construction
  • Alarm notification

19
Some Commercial Products
  • meCard Smart Card

20
Features
  • meCard can be used with fingerprint biometric
technology, or as an individual identification
    solution.

21
Some Commercial Products
  • Palmprint
    Identification System
  • (Hong Kong
    Polytechnic University)

22
Comparison
  • Unlike hand geometry, which measures a hand-size
and finger-length, Palmprint focuses on the inner
surface of a hand, its pattern of lines and the
    shape of its surface.

23
Application of these products
  • Left a fingerprint verification system
manufactured by Digital Persona Inc. is used for
    computer and network login.
  • Right A fingerprint-based point of sale (POS)
terminal manufactured by Indivos Inc., that
verifies the customers before charging their
credit cards to speed up payment in retail shops.

24
Application of these products
  • Left A fingerprint-based door lock manufactured
by BioThentica Corp. used to restrict access to
    premises is shown.
  • Right The Immigration and Naturalization Service
Accelerated Service System (INSPASS), which is
installed at major airports in the U.S., is based
    on hand geometry verification technology
    developed by Recognition Systems, Inc.

25
Application of these products
  • Left shows a border passage system using iris
    recognition at London's Heathrow airport.
  • Right Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv (Israel)
uses Express Card entry kiosks fitted with hand
geometry systems for security and immigration.

26
Application of these products
  • Left The FacePass system from Viisage is used in
    POS verification applications like ATMs,
therefore, obviating the need for PINs.
  • Right The Identix TouchClock fingerprint system
is used in time and attendance applications.
