  • By Gabrielle Good

2
What is Malaria?
  • Malaria is probably the oldest disease known to
    man.
  • It is believed to have derived from West Africa.
  • Malaria spread around the world, and during the
1950s, it almost completely disappeared from
    North America.

3
Cause
  • The genus of the parasite that causes Malaria is
    Plasmodium.
  • Plasmodium infects red blood cells in mammals.
  • There are four species which cause malaria in
    mammals.
  • P. vivax
  • P. ovale
  • P. falciparum
  • P. Malarie

4
Cause (continued)
  • Plasmodium has three life-cycle stages
  • Gametocytes
  • Merzoites
  • Sporozoites
  • Three causes of malaria are getting bitten by an
Anopheles mosquito, coming in contact with
infected blood, and sharing a needle with an
    infected person.
  • An unborn baby can contract malaria if the mother
    has it.

5
Symptoms
  • There are many symptoms of Malaria
  • Fever and flulike illness
  • Shaking chills
  • Intense sweating
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue

6
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Anemia
  • Jaundice

7
Diagnosis
  • Malaria is diagnosed according to the symptoms.
  • If you dont get symptoms right away, it can take
months or years until you get the symptoms of
    malaria
  • A blood test is usually taken to confirm the
    diagnosis

8
Treatment
  • Malaria is treated according to the severity of
the disease, and can be cured if treated during
    the early stages
  • Almost all of the malarial parasites are treated
with Chloroquine phosphate and a drug called
    primaquine.
  • There is no vaccine for malaria.
  • Malaria is a protozoa, so gram staining is not
    used.

9
Prevention
  • Malaria can be prevented by taking medicine
before, during, and after travel to an area where
    malaria is present
  • In epidemic areas, mosquito nets are used for
    prevention

10
Summary
  • The parasite that causes Malaria is plasmodium.
  • Causes of malaria are getting bitten by an
Anopheles mosquito, and coming in contact with an
    infected persons blood.
  • Symptoms are fever, shaking chills, headaches,

  • Malaria is diagnosed according to symptoms
  • It is treated according to the severity of the
