9What are some of the negative aspects of chatting?
10Some chatting tips
- Use a nickname that does not say too much about
you - (for example SiLLyBee, dOnlyOne, BrwnEydGrl,
web_dude101) - Dont give out personal information (which city
you live in, which school you go to, etc.) - Dont send out pictures of yourself - especially
to people you dont know in real life - Dont meet with people you only know from the
internet - especially not alone or without anyone
knowing where you are going - If you talk to someone online often, tell a
friend, a sibling or a parent

21Cyberpredators and luring
www.cybertip.ca
22Not everyone is out there to get you...
BUT you should be aware of some risks
23An example Katrinas story
- In 2003, 12 year old Katrina (from Ontario) was
chatting online when she started receiving
sexually explicit advances. She was allegedly
propositioned for sex during an hour-long chat.
She was also asked to send a pair of her panties
to the person she was online with. Later, two
telephone calls were made to the Katrinas home
from the person she had met online. - Katrinas mother found out and contacted the
police who eventually - arrested the 38 year old cyberpredator who
was chatting with Katrina - and charged him with invitation to sexual
touching and child luring.
24Luring tactics
- They might offer you
- Assistance, bribes or gifts
- Affection
- Jobs (modeling, acting, or anything)
- Others may
- Threaten you
- Try to show authority over you
- Claim they are in an emergency situation
