2New/recent activities Suggested hot MSPS/SPS
test with GOES-12 data via GOES-11. Invested
GOES-11 imager and sounder data while it was out
of storage. Working with a grad student on
turbulence Asked to be on the GOES-R Calibration
Steering Committee Several posters at the 13th
Satellite conference Helped (with an undergrad)
to build a GOES-8 web page as suggested by
Colleen Hartman. Organizing (with Andy) the 4th
NOAA hyperspectral workshop next week in
Madison 3rd GOES-R Users Conference (brochure,
committee, speaker, session chair, poster chair,
poster presenter, etc.)

Moisture Weighting Functions
High spectral resolution advanced sounder will
have more and sharper weighting functions
compared to current GOES sounder. Retrievals will
have better vertical resolution.

22Data compression group accomplishments
- Recent compression research advancements include
- Improved lossless compression ratio using
predictive schemes with spectral re-ordering and
wavelets math (from 2 to 2.21 with brightness
temperature units) done by CIMSS at Univ of Wisc - Principal Component (PC) work continuing with
AIRS data by ORA - Impressive lossless compression ratio 31 using
math of Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) in
digital counts by the CREST at CCNY. (Recall that
when the data compression group was first formed,
the best lossless compression ratios hoped for
were 21.) - Impressive lossless compression ratio 31 using
predictive vector quantization (PVQ) by CIMSS.
This 3.31 ratio can be compared to 2.31 for
JPEG200. - Each group using common data-sets for
comparisons. These data-sets have been made
freely available.
23Recent Compression Publications
- 3rd GOES-R Users Conference Broomfield CO May
10-13, 2004 - 6 posters on data compression
- CIMSS since Jan 2002, 22 papers, journal
articles, posters - CIMSS 3 possible patent applications
- CIMSS invited to submit chapter in new book on
hyperspectral sounder compression by Brandeis
University - CREST at CCNY since Feb 2004 1 paper, 1 poster
- Request by 2 leading compression research univ.
