Short-term Prediction Research and Transition
Mission of the SPoRT Center Apply NASA
measurement systems and unique Earth science
research to improve the accuracy of short-term
(0-24 hr) weather prediction at the regional and
local scale
2
Interactions with WFOs
  • End to end transition activity
  • Transition cutting edge research to operations
  • WFO, other government agencies, and private
    sector
  • Keys to success
  • Link data / products to forecast problems
  • Integrate capabilities into AWIPS
  • Assessment of product impact on ops.
  • Provide training / forecaster
  • interaction feedback
  • Data and products
  • NASA satellites MODIS, AMSR-E, AIRS
    real-time, high resolution
  • Unique forecast products with assimilated NASA
    data (WRF)
  • Special GOES, polar, and composite products
  • Total lightning data

Data Dissemination Via LDM
Real-time MODIS, AMSR-E, and AIRS data from
direct broadcast network

4
Programmatic Accomplishments
  • Established a working paradigm for transition of
research capabilities to operations a foot
bridge over the valley of death
  • Regularly improvement in weather diagnostic and
forecast capabilities at the WFO level
  • Developed user advocacy for new products, many of
which will become future NOAA operational
    capabilities
  • Trained forecasters on use of new technologies
  • Developed, tested and transitioned various tools
to collaborative organizations for application to
    their transition activities
  • Broadened partnerships to extend capabilities to
new satellites and next generation weather
    display systems

5
The Next 5 Years
  • Continue to demonstrate utility of NASA
    observations
  • AWIPS II and NPOESS
  • Transition current capabilities to AWIPS II (Fall
    09)
  • Demonstrate for NPP by providing VIIRS and CrIMSS
    data and products to WFOs
  • Data Assimilation in WRF
  • Application on GPM and SMAP observations

6
SPoRT Proving Ground for GOES-R
  • Currently
  • AWIPS and AWIPS II centric
  • Transition MODIS, AIRS and LMA data precursor
    observations to GOES-R instruments
  • Produce products tailored for WFO operations
  • Coordinating with Jason Tuell (AWIPS II) and Jim
Silva (NDE) and Southern Region Headquarters
  • GOES-R Proving Ground
  • Prototype products for coastal WFOs forecast
    problems (ABI)
  • Simulated Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM)
    observations
  • Radiance / profile assimilation in regional
    models (e.g. WRF)

7
SPoRT Proving Ground for GOES-R
  • Prototype products for coastal WFOs forecast
    problems (ABI)
  • based on MODIS and VIIRS (NPOESS) data products
  • work with Jim Silva and NDE team
  • draw on MODIS experience

8
SPoRT Proving Ground for GOES-R
  • Total Lightning Products
  • Simulated Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM)
    observations
  • 4D displays of total lightning flash
    information, lightning warning and forecast
    products
  • link work with GLM AWG team at NASA/MSFC/UAH
  • disseminate to numerous Southern Region offices

9
SPoRT Proving Ground for GOES-R
  • Data Assimilation and Forecast Impact
  • Radiance / profile assimilation in regional
    models (e.g. WRF)
  • GSI and WRF/3DVar to produce enhanced analysis
    fields for WRF initialization
  • local offices and NSSL (Jack Kain)
