Introduction
  • The following presentation is meant for students
    learning Italian as a second language to help
    them familiarize themselves with Italian
    culture.
  • The presentation will be delivered in English
    during this session for the benefit of those who
    do not understand Italian.

Rome
  • Capital city of Italy and Lazio.
  • Italy's largest and most populated city,
    spreading over a 5.352 km² area.
  • Located in the central-western portion of the
    Italian peninsula, on the river Tiber.

The Eternal City
  • It is nicknamed The Eternal City due to its
    magnificent history spreading over 2500 years.
  • Legendary Foundation Romulus and Remus.

S.P.Q.R
  • At first it was dominated by Etruscan kings who
    were in turn dethroned in favor of a republic.
  • Romans adopted many elements of the Etruscan and
    Greek cultures.

An Empire
  • Thanks to the republican system Rome soon evolved
    from a small city to a vast and powerful empire.
  • Rome became the largest city in the world.
  • Romans promoted the spreading of Latin, which
    became a global language.

  • Julius Caesar Was the first Roma emperor after
    the Republic
  • Nero threw thousands of Christians to the lions
    and burnt Rome.
  • Diocletian split the empire between west and
    east.
  • Constantine was the first Christian emperor.

The End of the Empire
  • In the end the Roman Empire was overrun by
    barbarians from the north.
  • There were 3 major migrations.
  • The final blow came when Rome itself was
    conquered by the Visigoths in the year AD 476.

  • The city hosts some of the most important
    political buildings.
  • Palazzo Chigi seat of the Italian government.
  • Montecitorio seat of the chamber of deputies.
  • Palazzo Madama seat of the Italian senate.

  • Rome is everyday flooded by thousands of
    tourists, the main reason being that it holds
    many valuable historical monuments. Some of these

  • It is an independent state.
  • It is the capital of Christianity.
