Title: Ecology

1
Ecology
  • Biomes of the World

2
What is a biome
  • A large region by a specific type of climate and
certain types of plants and animals communities
  • Biomes are described by their vegetation because
this determines what type of other organisms can
    survive there.

3
Tropical Rainforest
  • Located in a belt around the earth near the
    equator
  • They help regulate world climate and plays vital
roles in the nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon cycles

4
Tropical Rainforest
  • Receive heavy rains and high temperatures all
    year
  • May receive 200 t0 450 cm of rainfall per year
  • They are the most biologically diverse in the
    world

5
Temperate Deciduous Forest
  • Experience seasonal variations in temperature and
    rainfall
  • They receive 75 to 125 cm or precipitation.
  • Tall trees with small shrubs growing under the
    trees
  • The animals are adapted to forest food and
    shelter

6
Taiga
  • A northern forest with mostly conifer trees
  • Growing season may be as short as 50 days
  • Winters may last 6 to 10 months long

7
Taiga
  • The plants are mostly conifers which causes the
    soil to be acidic
  • There are many migratory birds, rodents and moose

8
Savannas
  • Savannas are located north and south of tropical
    rain forest
  • Have distinct wet seasons
  • Most receive 90 to 150 cm of precipitation per
    year

9
Savannas
  • All plants must go along time without rain
  • There are a few trees, but mostly grasses
  • Most of the animals are grazing animals
  • Some have learned to follow the rains

10
Temperate grasslands
  • Get to little rainfall to support trees
  • Dominated by different types of grasses and
    flowering plants
  • Grasslands receive about 25cm of precipitation
    per year

11
Temperate grasslands
  • Prairie grasses and lots of wildflowers grow here

  • Most of the animals are grazing animals such as
    bison
  • The other type of animals are burrowing animals

12
Chaparral
  • Temperate woodland biome that have a fairly dry
    climate
  • Most of the plants are small shrubs that grow in
    dense patches

13
Chaparral
  • It is dominated by evergreen shrubs
  • Most of the animals have developed great
camouflage such as lizards, chipmunks, and mule
    deer

14
Deserts
  • The driest biomes on earth
  • All the plants of the desert are adapted to
    survive in hot dry weather

15
Deserts
  • Deserts receive less than 25 cm or precipitation
    a year
  • Most of the animals of the deserts are animals
with skin or skin coverings that allow for the
    conservation of water

16
Tundra
  • Biome that is dominated by grasses, lichens, and
herbs that are located above the Artic circle
  • Underneath the top of soil is a layer of
    parentally frozen soil called permafrost

17
Tundra
  • Most of the plants are mosses and lichens. All
flowering plants are short to avoid the strong
    winds
  • There are millions of migratory birds fly here
    during the summer for breeding
  • Many grazing animals also lives here
