7Research Paper Overview My research paper began
with a brief history of clay pottery created by
the Quapaw Indian Tribe. It described a few of
the uses of pottery for the tribe and some of the
more common decorative designs. My paper focused
on the materials and skills needed for an amateur
artist to learn how to create ceramic pottery
pieces. My paper reviewed types of clay that
can be used, types of tools needed to work with
the clay and how to prepare the clay to begin
creating a pottery piece. I also covered a few
of the common methods used to create ceramic
pottery pieces. The methods described in my
paper were slab, coil and pinch. For each method
I also described the tools needed to create a
pot. My paper concluded with potential careers
for those interested or skilled in ceramic arts.
It discussed the schooling and the career options.
8Things to Note

- Variety of verbs used (see red text on next
slide) - Dont type My paper talked about ... or In

11Project Overview For my project, I led an after
school art program at Riverton Middle School for
four weeks. The program focused on introducing
students to clay and basic clay working
techniques. Twenty students enrolled in the class
and we met three times a week in Mrs. Keys
classroom. On the first day students watched a
slide show of photos of clay pieces I had
created. Then, each student was given a portion
of clay. They learned some of the basic
properties of clay and how to work it to before
it can be used to create a pottery piece. During
the second session, I taught students how to use
the coil, slab and pinch techniques. For the next
six class periods, students created two pieces
using two different techniques. I required that
the pieces they created be able to hold
something, but not necessarily fluid. During
the final week of the after school art program,
students used glaze to decorate their pots. The
Red Star Studio in Joplin, MO allowed me to use
their kiln space to fire the pieces for the
students. The clay pots created by my student are
on display in the middle school office.

17OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
- Use color to your advantage you can put colored
paper into the printer (NOT construction paper).
- Your fonts do not have to be printed in black but
they need to be in darker shades. - Choose font styles and sizes that can be read
from 3 feet away TEST THIS!
