- - Aim to relieve fishing pressure on the
inshore reefs and to increase the supply of fish
to the domestic market. - Commercial markets - Commercial fishery and
exports - 3rd major export earner --contributed 27 to
the FOB value (2006). - Governments obligation -is to ensure the long
term utilization of the resources. - Fisheries Management Act 2002 principle

52. CURRENT STATUS OF THE FISHERY
62. CURRENT STATUS OF THE FISHERY
- 2.1 Fleet Structure
- 2.1.1 History
- Since the beginning of this fishery(1980s) the
FAO/UNDP Boat Building Scheme built fishing
vessels (28ft) equipped with 4 hand-reels - - a few privately built vessels also
participated in the fishery - In recent years the FAO/UNDP-designed vessels
have been out-competed by bigger, and better
vessels those being used today!
72. CURRENT STATUS OF THE FISHERY
Not all vessels were active for the full calendar
year
82. CURRENT STATUS OF THE FISHERY
- 2.2 Annual Catch Estimate
- Annual Catch recorded since the beginning of
Data collection - .
Data collection began in 1986. (1986 -1992)
..continued in 1993
But it was not done consistently (1993-1999)
Consistent data collection in 2000 and 2001
Inconsistent data collection in 2002 and 2003
( 2004 )-Review data collection system
appropriate data system

purchase fish from private vessels for export - In the year 2006 the employment of fishers,
masters, processors and retailers is over 200
people when all boats are operating - The export data and FOB values for the fishery
from 2000 to 2006 is used to predict the
current status of the fishery
