Steps to Writing an Effective Persuasive Speech
  • Brainstorm your researchable heroes
  • Create at least two idea webs using your
    background knowledge of these heroes
  • Do some preliminary research to make a final
    decision (the better your choice, the more
    enjoyable the experience)
  • Seek out quality sources that include a book, an
    article from an online database, and an article
    from a quality website (.gov, .org, .edu)

  • 5) Read your research material carefully and
    annotate using NOODLE TOOLS.
  • 6) Be sure you have enough information to
    prove your claim that your hero is indeed
    heroic.
  • Consider whether your information covers
    three to five major points.
  • You may have to seek out more than 3
    sources (3 is the MINIMUM).
  • 7) Create your annotated bibliography using
    noodle tools. Be mindful of mechanics.
  • 8) Create the outline of your speech.

  • A strong introduction is vital to the success
    of your speech because it can win over your
    audience immediately. The introduction serves
    four main purposes
  • It focuses the audiences attention.
  • It establishes WIIFT (whats in it for them).
  • It establishes you as a credible source.
  • It previews your subject.

Focusing the Audiences Attention
  • Without the attention and interest of your
    audience, you cannot accomplish your purpose to
    inform. Your challenge is to make the audience
    want to listen. How?
  • Use a hook. This is a way to pull the
    audiences attention into what you are going to
    tell them.

  • Ask a question
  • State an unusual fact
  • Give an illustration, example, or story
  • Present a quotation
  • Refer to an historic event
  • Use humor

  • What does your audience need to know before you
    get into the meat of your speech?
  • What are the big ideas? Preview. Stay away
    from details.
  • Establish your credibility Why are you an
    expert on this topic? Why should they
    listen to you?

  • What is its job?
  • To state the purpose of your speech
  • What is the purpose of your speech?
  • To persuade your audience that the person who is
    heroic in your mind should be heroic in the minds
    of your audience

  • Organize your information into 3-5 main points.

  • Biographical information (only if it supports
    your claim that your hero is indeed heroic)
