Title: Epithelial Tissue

2Note to instructors I use these PowerPoint
slides in histology lectures that I give to first
year medical students. Copy the slides, or just
the images into your own teaching media. We all
know that teaching science often requires
compromises and simplification for specific
student populations, or the requirements of a
specific course. Please feel free to offer
suggestions for improvements, corrections, or
additional illustrations. I would be pleased to
hear from anyone who finds my work useful, and am
always willing to make it better. Also, the
images have been compressed to screen resolution
to keep PowerPoint file size down, and I can
provide them at any resolution. Contact me about
the illustrations and Mitchell L. Berk about the
photomicrographs. Stephen E. Fish,

3Pseudostratified Transitional Epithelia,
Glands
4Pseudostratified respiratory epithelia
- Pseudostratified columnar with cilia goblet
cells - Lines the airways
5Pseudostratified with cilia goblet cells
(respiratory epithelia)
Goblet cells
Ciliated columnar cells
Terminal bar
Basal stem cells
6Pseudostratified columnar with stereocilia in the
epididymis
7Transitional epithelia in the urinary tract
- Cell bodies are stacked
- But they all contact the basement membrane with a
pedicel (cytoplasmic extension)
8Transitional epithelia
9Transitional epithelia is designed to be
stretched (relaxed vs. full bladder)
10Glands are epithelia develop as a downgrowth
from a surface
11Exocrine glands remain attached to the surface,
while endocrine glands separate
12Simple exocrine glands
13Cross section of large intestine glands
14Simple tubular glands in large intestine
15Simple coiled tubular gland- sweat gland
16 Large exocrine gland anatomy Connective tissue

18Large exocrine gland anatomy Blood supply
19Large exocrine gland anatomy Ductwork
20Large exocrine gland anatomy Serous secretion
21Large exocrine gland anatomy Mucous secretion
22Large exocrine gland anatomy Mixed serous
