Locations of the Biome
  • There are seven oceans.

Climate of the Ocean
  • Salinity is the amount of salt per 1000g of
water. All of the water in the ocean has
salinity. The average salinity is 35 ppt, but
between 32 and 37 is common.

7
Climate (continued)
  • The temperature in the ocean varies depending on
how close to the equator the body of water is,
and on the depth of the water

8
Layers of the Ocean
  • Epilelagic
  • Mesopelagic
  • Bathypelagic
  • Abyssopelagic
  • Hadalpelagic

9
Epipelagic Layer
  • Extends from surface to 200m below the surface
  • Has the most visible light of any of the layers

http//www.seasky.org/reeflife/sea2k.html
10
Mesopelagic Layer
  • Ranges from 200-1000 meters below the surface
  • Very little visible light
  • Some bioluminescent creatures live here

11
Bathypelagic
  • Ranges from 1000 meters to 4000 meters
  • The only light is from bioluminescent creatures
  • Immense water pressure
  • Many creatures found here are black or red due to
    the lack of light

12
Abyssopelagic Layer
  • Ranges from 4000-6000 meters below the surface
  • Near freezing temperatures at this level
  • Heavy water pressure
  • Most creatures found here are invertebrates like
    squids

13
Hadalpelagic Layer
  • Ranges from 6000-10000 meters
  • Creatures like starfish can live here
  • Mostly found in Deep-Sea trenches
  • Extremely high water pressure
  • Below Freezing temperatures

14
Special Features of the Biome
  • Hydrothermal Vents are geisers below the Ocean.
  • Underwater Volcanoes are forming new islands such
    as the Hawaiian Islands.
  • The Mid Ocean Ridge is Earths longest mountain
range. It is a series of mountains and valleys
where crustal plates are moving apart.
