Title: How Children Become Terrorists

1
Born To Be Bad
  • How Children Become Terrorists
  • Section 013
  • Nate Olson, Emily Oswald, Amy Peterson, Kayla
    Moen, David Hackel, Josh Olson

2
General Idea of How Maslows Pyramid Applies to
Terrorists
  • In order to reach self-actualization, each need
    must be met.
  • Terrorists get each need, but each need is
    negatively met.
  • Due to each need being met with such negativity,
    their self-actualization is ultimately negative.

3
Maslows Hierarchy of Needs
4
Physiological Needs
  • Include food, water, clothing, shelter, etc.

5
These Are Obtained Negatively
  • Youth learn that stealing gets them somewhere.
  • They are discouraged from eventually getting a
    job and being honest.

6
Safety Needs
  • A growing child does not receive support from a
    positive role model or parent.
  • They look elsewhere, such as gangs, How To
    Articles, weapons, and violence.

7
The Children Simulate Security
  • They live in a world of Survival of the
    Fittest.
  • Only weapons and sticking together with fellow
    troublemakers make them feel comfortable.
  • They take short cuts in their lives.
  • Nothing is earned honestly
  • Whatever they have is stolen

8
An Example Of Where Youth Turn To
  • Money Laundering in Colombia
  • 90 of U.S.s cocaine
  • Such Illegal Activity is what funds Terrorism.

9
Love
  • Love and belongingness are next on the ladder.
  • People have a need to belong and be accepted by
    various groups.
  • At this stage needs become dominant and people
will strive for meaningful relations with others.

10
An Un-loved Feeling
  • Children brought up in a terrorist society
    develop an un-loved feeling.
  • Children need support and control.
  • The children are isolated.
  • If their love needs are threatened for long
periods of time the need becomes unsatisfied.
  • They turn to violence to defend themselves.

11
Brainwashing
  • After convincing the children that this is their
    new family, the brainwashing begins.
  • Make a permanent commitment
  • Major amounts of time
  • Accept its teachings
  • Conform to their behavior restrictions

12
Talibon Brainwashing
  • Boys ranging from six years old to puberty are
being taught to revere Allah, to hate America,
and to prepare for martyrdom a Muslim ritual
    under the Taliban rule.
  • A nineteen-year-old orphan named Ul Fat stated,
"No one has to ask me to fight the Americans if
they strike Afghanistan. It is my duty to
    Allah.

13
Threats to the Recruitments
  • The manipulation destroys their ability to make
    independent decisions.
  • Subjected to severe mind-control processes
  • Terrorist groups even induce their members to
    commit suicide.
  • For example, the Taliban teaches the theory that
dying for Islam showers a host of blessings on
martyrs, including a welcome to heaven by a host
    of virgins.

14
A New Family
  • Consider themselves part of the family
  • It is about power, money, and control.
  • Accept this unity as a positive relationship
  • The absence of love

15
Low Self-Esteem
  • Easily Manipulated
  • Their living conditions are poor.
  • They are searching for someone or something to
    belong to.
  • They are easily led to believe that participating
in violent acts can make them feel better about
    themselves.

16
They Establish Self-Esteem in a Highly Negative
Way
  • Violence criminal activity give them respect
    among peers.
  • The more feared and respected they are, the
    better they feel about themselves.
  • This causes a never-ending cycle of violence and
    criminal activity.

17
Media Attention
  • Potential terrorists observe the attention that
    terrorists receive for their actions.
  • They feel this is the only way they can have an
    impact upon society.

18
Robert E. Hunter
  • Hunter stated in The Los Angeles Times that We
the media multiply their role a thousand fold."
  • Such exaggeration by the media causes terrorists
to think their actions have a greater impact than
    what they truly do.
  • The Taliban thought their attack on the W.T.C.
    would cripple our country.

19
First Four Needs Are Neglected
  • What little they have was stolen
  • Gangs were sense of safety
  • No parents or role models
  • Low self-esteem

20
The Self Actualization
  • Maslows Needs have been fulfilled, but in a
    dangerously negative way.
  • At this point, most potential terrorists realize
that their life has amounted to nothing.

21
Self Actualization Occurs
  • They conclude that they can only have an impact
upon society by committing violent acts.

22
Terrorism vs. U.S.
23
Osama Bin Laden
  • Osama supplies youth with Maslows Needs.
  • In turn, he brainwashes them to believe in him.

24
How He Recruits
  • He does this by supplying them with otherwise
    unobtainable physiological goods.
  • Him and his violence is the only security in an
    insecure place.
  • They only have affection for him.
  • They can only build self-esteem by committing
    violent acts.

25
Discussion Questions
  • What can be done to prevent a child born in such
negative circumstances from committing such a
    violent act?
  • Do you believe terrorists satisfy Maslow's Needs?
    Why?
  • How do you think a youth is able to develop into
a terrorist without someone doing something to
    stop it?
