Some safeguarding issues apply to both children
or adults. Staff have a duty to seek advice and
report any concerns . Remember the Safeguarding
Team are available for any help and support

Honour Based Violence This is a violation of a
persons Human Rights . It is a collection of
violent and abusive practices, which are used to
control behaviour within families or other social
groups to protect perceived cultural and
religious beliefs and/or honour. Such violence
can occur when perpetrators perceive that a
relative has shamed the family and / or community
by breaking their honour code. The violence can
include assault, imprisonment ,encouraging or
assisting suicide and murder. This abuse affects
mainly women. Indicators may include Attempts to
separate or divorceThreats to kill or denial of
access to children Pressure to go abroad for
forced marriage

Forced Marriage This is a marriage in which one
or both spouses do not or (in the case of some
adults with learning or physical disabilities)
cannot consent to the marriage and duress is
involved. Duress can include physical,
psychological, financial, sexual and emotional
pressure. Forced marriage can apply to children
young people and adults Warning signs
include Anxiety, depression or emotionally
withdrawn Absence from school, day centre or
other regular activity Fear of forthcoming visits
to their country of origin Surveillance by family
members especially siblings

  • Female Genital Mutilation
  • Removal of part or all of the female genitalia
    for cultural or other
  • non therapeutic reasons.
  • Warning signs include
  • Knowing that the family belongs to a community in
    which FGM is practised and are making
    preparations for the child to take a holiday
    abroad
  • Child discloses a special procedure will take
    place on holiday
  • Knowledge that mother or siblings has had FGM

PREVENT Violent Extremism   Children , young
people and vulnerable adults including those with
mental health issues or learning disabilities may
be susceptible to exploitation into violent
extremism by radicalisers. Violent extremists
often groom or use persuasive rationale and
charismatic individuals to attract people to
become terrorists or support violent extremism.
This can apply to service users and staff working
in the NHS
If you suspect it report it !
  • Possible Warning signs
  • Service users or staff accessing
    terrorist-related material online, including
    through social network sites.
  • Reports of changes in behaviour, friendships or
    actions and requests for assistance.  
  • Patients/staff voicing opinions drawn from
    terrorist-related ideologies.
  • Use of extremist or hate terms to exclude others
    or incite violence.

Safeguarding Additional Information
Remember your duty to safeguard not only your
primary client but anyone at potential risk. At
each clinical contact please consider
THINK FAMILY
Are there any other vulnerable adults in the home?
Is there a history of Domestic Abuse?
Are there children in the household?
Is the person a risk to others in the household?
Are any other services involved?
Is there a history of Mental Health or Substance
Misuse that may affect others
Are any other SEPT services involved?
Has a referral been made to other services if
risks are identified?
These need considering and recording on any
Alert /Referral form, and in records as
appropriate.

Preventing abuse
All teams must have in place systems that
minimise the possibility of abuse.
Effective Risk Assessment and Care Planning
These Include
Effective Training of Staff at the appropriate
level
Provision of Information to Service Users on
Protecting Themselves e.g.
Staff Meetings where Safeguarding is Discussed
Leaflets and Posters etc.
Service User Meetings where Safety is Discussed

Whistleblowing
Remember You do not need firm evidence to raise
a concern
Individual members of staff in the Trust have a
legal right and a duty to raise with their
Managers or the Trust Board any matters of
concern they may have about safety, clinical
practice, malpractice or wrong doing which may
affect patients, the public, other staff or the
organisation itself .
  • Your concern may include
  • Unethical Practice, Clinical/Non-Clinical
  • Concerns regarding the professional conduct or
  • performance of a member of staff
  • Criminal activity
  • Negligence Endangering of an individuals health
    and safety
  • Bullying or Harassment
  • Damage to the environment
  • Abuse of position/authority Maladministration
  • A miscarriage of justice on matters which may be
  • defined as gross misconduct
  • The Trust encourages and supports you to report
    concerns
