2The Birth of the iPod
- More than any other single product from Apple,
the iPod has changed the company and the world. - Before its introduction, MP3 players were the
realm of small companies with limited budgets. - After the iPod, the entire industry has evolved
and grown to the point where the largest computer
companies in the world have major interests in
the digital music industry.
3The First iPod
- Unlike most other players, the iPod does not use
controls that were better suited to the Sony
Walkman in 1979 than a MP3 player with a capacity
of thousands of songs.
- Instead of using skip buttons, you can spin a
wheel on the front of the device to scroll
through a list of songs to find the song the you
desire.
- The same wheel is used to control the menus of
the system.
4- You may ask
- What type is right for me?

23How could an iPod benefit me?
24You can even use your iPod for educational
benefits.
- As part of a university initiative to encourage
creative uses of technology, Duke distributed
20GB Apple iPod devices to over 1600 entering
first-year students in August 2004. - There are many academic uses for the iPod as an
educational tool - Students had portable access to course content
such as lectures, songs, course management tools,
and podcasts. - They had the ability to record lectures, class
discussions, and seminars. - File storage and transfer, especially for large
multimedia files, became easier. - As a result of this experiment, there were many
benefits that were found - Enhanced support for individual wants and needs
- Increased student participation and interest in
class discussions - After realizing the benefits of using an iPod in
an educational community the one downfall is lack
of knowledge and awareness of the iPod itself.
25Professor in Your Pocket?
- Could you use a professor in your pocket? iPods
are great for reviewing and catching up on
lectures and seminars. - In the fall of 2005, nearly a dozen colleges
implemented course casting, or recorded lectures
that can be downloaded and watched on iPods. Is
yours next? - Students at Purdue University have downloaded
40,000 lectures since the start of the semester.
