    the Large Hadron Collider, which is the most
    powerful particle accelerator in the world. It
    was designed to smash together high-energy
    electrons to simulate the conditions that
    occurred at the Big Bang.
  • One possible outcome of the experiment will be
    the creation of a small black hole inside the
    machine. Some people are afraid that this black
    hole could grow out of control and destroy the
    Earth. Most scientists say that this is not
    likely to happen. But because of that fear, some
    people have tried to block the start-up of the
    collider.
  • Think about the purpose of science in our world
    today, and in a paragraph of at least 7
    well-written sentences, explain why you think
    scientists should or should not be allowed to
    conduct experiments that might have dangerous
    consequences.
