  • The first great obstacle to motivation is a
different kind of blindness the inability to see
    yourself as others see you.
  • Are you willing to appear foolish in front of
    other people?

  • Yetta and Sam

  • Sam Im willing to do it.
  • Yetta (angrily) If youre going to feel that
way about it, Ill do it myself!

5
Interactions
  • Manifest part of an interaction (behavior
    feedback)
  • Every interaction can
  • Open new possibilities
  • Reinforce old possibilities
  • Activate survival roles
  • Increase assaultiveness
  • Increase pain

Satirs Interaction Model
  • Seven steps occur between the time you manifest
    something and I respond.
  • Sensory input
  • Interpretation
  • Feeling
  • Feeling about the feeling
  • Defense
  • Rules for commenting
  • Outcome

7
Why Communications Go Awry
  • Perception
  • Wrong time
  • Wrong Place
  • Wrong Person
  • Self-worth

8
Clearing up Communications
  • People respond better to you if you devote
    attention to their problems,
  • but one way of devoting attention to their
problems is by knowing and understanding your
    problems.

9
Clearing up Communications
  • Use this formula when approaching your people.
  • Tell them what you perceive
  • How you feel about what you perceive
  • How you feel about that feeling.
  • Example When I find myself asking you three
times when you will finish this late assignment,
I feel ashamed about acting like a dictator and
not trusting you, yet I dont know how else to
deal with my anxiety over the project schedule.
