Title: Does Matter Matter

1
Does Matter Matter?
  • Revision PPT

2
Revision index
  • About the structure of an atom
  • About elements and the periodic table
  • About chemical compounds
  • About separating mixtures
  • Types of reaction
  • Chemical formulae and equations

3
Atomic Structure
  • Action
  • Draw the structure of a typical atom
  • List the basic particles, their charge ,where are
    they found???
  • Define atomic number.
  • What is the mass number?

4
About the Periodic Table
  • Can you draw the short form of the periodic
table. This shows the first 20 elements
  • Elements in any one group are very similar
    chemically. Why is this?
  • Hint How many electrons are found in the outer
    electron shell?

5
About chemical compounds
  • Action Define an element!
  • How do compounds differ?
  • Prepare a table listing some names and formulae
    of some important compounds
  • What elements are present?
  • What is their ratio?

6
About mixtures and separation
  • How do you separate insoluble solids like sand or
    chalk from water?
  • How do you separate soluble solids from solutions
like salt or copper sulphate from a solution
  • What is chromatography?
  • When do we use distillation?
  • What is a centrifuge

7
Types of chemical reaction 1
  • Combustion reactions use oxygen and generate
heat. They usually have flames. Eg burning Mg or
    methane (in a Bunsen burner)
  • Decomposition reactions involve the breaking
large molecules into smaller ones. Eg heating
copper carbonate this will produce carbon dioxide

8
Types of chemical reaction 2
  • Synthesis reactions are the opposite of
decomposition. Photosynthesis is the best example
  • What happens during this process?
  • Precipitation reactions produce solids usually
from mixing solutions. What happened during your
    recent practical activities?
  • Write down and learn some examples

9
Writing a correct formula
  • Positive ions join to negative ions
  • The positive ion is shown first
  • A correct formula has no overall charge! MOST
    IMPORTANT
  • 2 or more polyatomic ions are shown in brackets
  • Try the following examples
