A Short History
  • Documentation back to 1974
  • Renovation plans started several times
  • Last attempt in 1989

  • Repairs/Maintenance limited
  • Roof, minor bracing done in 1996

Fund Raising Efforts
  • In 1990, the District sent out 5,100 mailers to
    the surrounding communities requesting donations
    to help renovate. 18,700 in pledges received.
  • 101,000 raised in 1994 by the Committee to Save
    the Griffin House.

Cost Issues

  • Sugimura Assoc August 2003 increased to
    3,588,586 for CPI increases
  • 33 added for architect, engineer, inspection,
    etc.

  • 2,771 Assignable Square Feet
  • 1,722 per Assignable Square Foot

District Issues
  • Limited space available for building
  • Terrain
  • Seismic conditions
  • Need for expanded District Offices
  • Concern about proximity of Griffin House to known
    active fault.

  • Attempt to sell house to someone who could
    relocate and reconstruct.
  • Demolish
  • Move to another place on campus
  • Each would significantly impact the historical
    status and would a CEQA review.

Leave As-Is Option
  • Unlikely that District will have funds to repair
  • Does not qualify for state support
  • Charitable Foundations have little interest in
    funding this type of project
  • Continuing fire hazard, nuisance, liability
    exposure

  • Place advertisements offering to sell house to
    anyone willing to relocate it to another site.
