Edinburgh, The Lothians and Fife
  • Two healthboards
  • Training takes place in Teaching hospitals (WGH,
    RIE), Day hospitals and Geriatric Rehabilitation
    hospitals (RVH, Lib, Roodlands Day Hospital) and
    District General Hospitals (SJH, Borders General,
    QMH).
  • SpR 12 (two part time, one acting up, two on mat
    leave)
  • ST 10 (three pregnant)
  • Only 3 male registrars

Structure of Training
  • It used to start with GIM for two years at a
    district hospital, then combine Rehabilitation
    and Acute Geriatric Medicine and Stroke for the
    following 3 years with 6 more months of acute
    medicine.
  • Now mix and match Some ST start with
    Rehabilitation/others GIM.

What to squeeze in those 5 years
  • 2 years of General Internal Medicine
  • Secondments to CCU (1 month), ITU/HDU (2 months)
  • Continence module, osteoporosis, orthopaedic
    rehab
  • Stroke (2 to 6 months)
  • Old Age Psychiatry (1 to 2 months)
  • Experience in all fields of curriculum for
    Geriatric Medicine
  • One systematic review and publication, one
    presentation at Regional or National level

And for the ST as well
  • Evidence of competence level 2 for top 20 medical
    presentations (to qualify for GIM dual
    accreditation )
  • KBA Geriatric Medicine
  • Support from Posts Educational Supervisor,
    Personal Tutor and Academic Research Tutor.

Teaching
  • SpR/ST training days 5 days a year, coordinated
    by consultant and lead by SpR. Guest speakers and
    ourselves.
  • Attendance to Glasgows EBM day
  • GIM teaching 6 days a year organised by RCP
    Edinburgh
  • BGS/SBGS attendance encouraged at least once a
    year
  • Research, Communication and Management course
    attendance (x1 each at least)
  • Sporadic difficulties of trainees in getting
    study leave/ funding

Appraisal and Assessment
  • General feeling of appraisal being too frequent,
    time consuming and paper loaded
  • Mixed feelings with regards e portfolio
  • Compulsory ARCP attendance with evidence
    submitted at least once a year
  • Discontent about assessment and amount of
    paperwork needing completion/submission, no
    discontent about training!
