Cranking Up Our War Machine
  • The U.S. had to pull itself together after the
    humiliating defeat at Pearl Harbor.
  • We ran the risk of the dictators crushing
    democracies.
  • Our Navy was in shambles and our Army was far
    from formidable.
  • The enemies miscalculated our ability to produce
    huge quantities of weapons and food.
  • The dictators said democracy was rotten and
    decadent.
  • THEY WERE WRONG!!

Propaganda
  • This war was everyones job and the government
    had to make sure that everyone did their share.
  • Posters were everywhere urging all to do their
    share.
  • Hollywood made newsreels that carried only the
    good news from the War.
  • Americans were not allowed to see pictures of
    dead soldiers.
  • Correspondents reports were censored.
  • Folks at home did not know that most P.O.W.s
    were mistreated or even killed.

Women
  • More then 6 million women who had never worked
    for wages entered the workforce during World War
    II.
  • Rosie the Riveter was created to show women it
    was o.k. to work.
  • The government set up 3,000 day-care center for
    the children of the workers.
  • When the war ended two thirds of the women war
    workers left the work force.
  • Many were forced out by employers eager to
    reemploy returning servicemen.

Japanese Americans
  • The Japanese, to many, seemed to be the ideal
    immigrants
  • Puritan work ethic
  • A strong pattern of upward mobility
  • Embraced the United Stated with great patriotism

  • February 19,1942
  • Relocated more than 100,000 Americans of Japanese
    descent (Nisei)
  • They were sent to War Relocation Camps on the
    West Coast.
  • More then 60 were U.S.Citizens
  • One-third were under the age of 19

African Americans
  • About one million African-Americans served in
    every branch in every theater.
  • Units and camps were segregated.
  • A1940 decision gave up segregation at officer
    candidate schools-except Air Force
  • A flight school at Tuskegee, Alabama trained 600
    black pilots

  • An executive order forbade discrimination in
    defense work
  • A nondiscrimination clause was added to defense
    contracts.
  • The membership of the NAACP grew during the war
    from 50,000 to
  • 450,000.

  • Big Band swing was the rage during the war.
  • Big band leaders Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman,
    Duke Ellington, and Tommy Dorsey became famous on
    the home front and over seas.
  • Singer Frank Sinatra became the first teen idol
  • Big Band jazz was made for dancing.
  • The jitterbug and the lindy hop were the were the
    most popular dances in clubs from coast to coast.
  • The government formed big bands and provided
    recordings called v-disks to provide
    entertainment for the troops.

Rationing and Recycling
  • Rationing was the activity that everyone at home
    had to do.
  • Ration books were distributed.
  • Favorite slogans were Use it up/ Wear it out
    ,Make it do/or do without, and When you ride
    alone,you ride with Hitler
  • Citizens were urged to join car-sharing clubs

Victory Gardens
  • All citizens were urged to plant victory gardens.
  • Home canning was encouraged since tin was scarce.
  • Gardens were planted everywhere there was dirt.
  • Americans were encouraged to waste not an ounce
