Title: Death Art

Death Art
2
The breadth of funerary and death art is great.
For this unit I have chosen only to focus on
perceptions of death, rituals associated with
death, and memorialization of death in our
Eurocentric American culture. The artists shown
are not from American but, have great influence
on American popular culture. I realize that this
is a limited slice of this comprehensive study.
I will add supplementary units as I research and
compile them.

Jim Morrison was highly influenced by the
artistry of Hieronymous Bosch. Bosch was a Dutch
painter who concentrated on religious themes, and
formulated scenes of saints and the holy family,
the likes of which none had seen before. The
vividness of this imagery was to illustrate the
constant surrounding of both good and evil forces
in the world. The painting above, "The Temptation
of Saint of Anthony", creates a surrealistic
scene of love and hate in a variety of
interesting ways. For example, Bosch is well
known for his frequent use of randomly placed
demon engines in his compositions. Demons are in
the air, in the sea and on land, making it hard
for Anthony (the blue figure in the middle of the
scene) to maintain his fervent monasticism.
Through Bosch's paintings of heaven and hell on
earth, there is a universality created. Bosch
does not make St. Anthony the pillar of strength.
Instead, he has him cowering and praying for the
strength needed to ignore sin. This depiction
gives the common man hope, and allows him to see
that even the purest individual is faced daily
with evil. Morrison integrated this concept of
daily spiritual and demonic duality of society
into his poetry. Like Rimbaud, Morrison
concentrates on these higher powers constantly
around him and, through his poetry, seeks to
reach beyond it all and achieve a supreme state
of bliss.
