E-Waste Agency EWA, Bangalore
  • Initially established as a voluntary association
    of manufacturers, Government agencies NGOs in
    Bangalore in 2005PPP
  • Registered as a Society in 2007 under Karnataka
    Societies Registration Act, 1960 as a
    non-profit, non-governmental organization to
    promote scientific and sound management of
    Electronic Electrical Waste.
  • Supported by the Indo-German Swiss e-Waste
    Initiative, constituted by the Ministry of
    Environment and Forests MoEF, GOI, German
    Technical Cooperation GTZ and Swiss Federal
    Institute for Material Science and Technology
    EMPA

Objectives of EWA
  • Facilitate eco-friendly, financially viable and
    socially acceptable e-waste management
  • Promote and safeguard the interests, rights and
    privileges of the concerned industries,
    Government bodies and civil society
  • To promote and encourage fellowship and document
    lessons learnt so that it could be replicated
    in other cities

Membership of EWA
  • Open to all Organisations and Individuals
    concerned with management of Waste from
    Electrical and Electronic Equipment viz..,
  • Manufacturers, Importers, Traders and Assemblers
    of Electrical and Electronic Equipments
    Accessories
  • Consumers i.e. users of IT Communication
    equipments including software development
    companies, BPOs,, government non-govt bodies
  • Associations of manufacturers consumers,
    government agencies and NGOs
  • Authorised recyclers of e-waste and associations
    of recyclers

  • Promote environmentally safe management of
    e-waste that would
  • facilitate best repair /refurbishment /recycling
    /disposal options
  • influence consumer behaviour towards
    environmentally friendly actions
  • support local initiatives
  • achieve better product stewardship
  • Promote pilot schemes studies
  • Promote public awareness

Achievements/Progress
  • Provided Technical Assistance to informal sector
    E-Waste recyclers Association-EWaRDD,
    Bangalore
  • Establishment of clean E-Waste collection Cell in
    the Electronics city, Hosur ELCIA
  • Household e-waste collection Pilot activity at
    Domlur Municipal Ward, Bangalore
  • Study conducted to Identify Informal sector
    operators in Mysore City
  • Publication of e-nam newsletter Nov 2007, Jan
    2008, Sept 2008
  • An e-Waste awareness campaign organised in
    Bangalore University Environmental Science and
    Electronics faculty and students
  • Mangalore e waste assessment (in progress)

Estimate of E-Waste
  • As per GTZ MAIT sponsored study conducted
    recently by IMRB, annual e-waste generated in
    India during 2007 was estimated at 332, 979 MT
    besides about 50, 000 MT entering the country by
    way of Imports
  • unprecedented growth of the Indian IT Industry
    during the last decade, and the early product
    obsolescence due to continuous innovation, is
    the cause for e-waste turning into fastest
    growing waste stream
  • Stake Holders 1 Manufactures

  • 3 Recyclers
  • 4 Policy Makers.

E-Waste Challenges
  • Rapidly increasing e-waste volumes- generated
    domestically and by imports- accurate figures
    not available
  • Low level of awareness- among manufacturers
    consumers of the hazards of incorrect e-waste
    disposal
  • Major portion of e-waste processed by the
    informal sector
  • Cherry-picking by recyclers-Environmental and
    Health Safety issues
  • No specific legislation for E-waste at present,
    Need for Policy and Regulatory framework for
    dealing with e-waste

Future perspectives
  • Having Policy and regulatory Frame work
    Legislation for dealing with E-waste
  • Facilitate establishment of collection and
    disposal system for large and small consumers to
    return all their e-waste safely
  • Develop EWA as a bridge between Industry,
    Regulatory Authority and Recyclers
  • Establishment of a voluntary system for
    manufacturers to take care of their product at
    end of life

Institutional Support Funding
  • EWA looks for resource support from
  • Exit Plan Corpus funding from the International
    cooperation ( about 1,00,000 Euros)
  • Support from IT industries/ Associations and
    Government (Contributions to corpus funds,
    sponsorship.
  • Associated international cooperation projects
  • Membership fees from Recyclers etc
