2
Four Stages of Frog Development
  • Fertilized eggs in a mass called a Spawn
  • Tadpoles hatch from the eggs
  • The tadpoles then develop into Froglets
  • Adult Frog

3
Adult Frog
  • Amphibian
  • Smooth skin, long jumping legs, squatty front
    legs, and webbed feet.
  • They live near the water and eat insects.
  • There are over 4000 species of frogs identified.

4
Spawn!
  • The female adult frog lays a mass of eggs (around
10,000) that are fertilized by the male frog
  • This mass of eggs is called the spawn
  • Inside each of these little eggs a tadpole is
    developing

Tadpoles

  • The water dwelling stage of this amphibian
  • The tadpoles have a small oval body, gills for
breathing underwater, and long tail with fins on
upper and lower parts of the tail for swimming.
  • These tadpoles will eventually lose the tail and
gills and become an adult frog.

6
Froglets
  • This is the short stage between the tadpole and
    the adult frog.
  • This is the point where the frog will first be
able to leave the water and breath air.
  • Once the froglet leaves the water it will take
about three years before that frog will mate and
start the cycle all over again.

7
Now we will do a small activity to see if you can
determine the different stages of the the frogs.
  • Print out the work-page I have designed by
clicking the box below. If not you can number a
piece of paper from 1 - 4 write down your answers
    there.
