Reminders

• Congratulations! You are now a Junior or a
  Senior. Act like one. Be responsible.
• Maintain high academic standards all year.
  Remember an F does not disappear off a
  transcript just because you have retaken the
  class.
• Keep up with your attendance. You are only
  allowed 7 UNEXCUSED absences each semester.
• Pay your debts. Report Cards, diplomas, etc will
  not be issued until these are paid.
• Check with your counselor to be sure you have the
  courses necessary for graduation and/or college
  entrance. Seniors will be called in for an
  individual meeting with their counselor to go
  over everything needed for graduation during the
  first 9 weeks of the school year.

More Reminders

• Apply early. Meet all deadlines, especially
  with SAT, college and scholarships applications.
  
• The SAT or ACT should only be taken if you are
  planning to enter a 4-year college immediately
  after high school graduation and you have taken
  or are enrolled in Algebra II. Statistics show
  much better scores are earned once a student has
  completed Algebra II and English 11. The SAT
  does not need to be taken if you are planning to
  attend a community college after graduation, even
  if you plan to transfer to a 4-year college from
  the 2-year college.
• The SAT will be offered at FHS on October 4th.
  The ACT will be given at EBHS on October 25th .
  Cost is 45.00 for the SAT and 31.00-46.00 for
  the ACT. Register at www.collegeboard.com and
  www.actstudent.org.
• Have SAT or ACT scores sent to the 4-year
  colleges you are applying to for admission.
  These scores will no longer be included on
  transcripts.
• Talk with armed services representatives. Get
  all promises in writing.
• Apply for employment opportunities early.
• Use resources collected at College Day on
  September 26th.
• Attend Financial Aid Night at PHS on January 22,
  2009, 700pm for information on scholarships,
  grants, and loans, as well as, information about
  the FAFSA application for free college monies
  from the federal government.

Tips for Juniors.

• Meet with your counselor to make sure that you
  are on track with graduation and Course of Study
  requirements.
• Plan on taking the SAT/ACT during your Junior
  year, if you are planning to attend a 4-year
  college after graduation. Make sure you have had
  the opportunity to have completed some, if not
  all, Algebra II and English 11 classes, before
  taking the SAT/ACT.
• Compile a list of colleges/universities that
  you are interested in attending. Cross off the
  ones that are not a fit for you.
• Location, Location, Location- discuss and decide
  the location of colleges you would like to
  attend.
• Juniors should be aware that the GPA and rank you
  receive at the end of the 11th grade will be what
  is sent out to colleges, etc. during the fall of
  your senior year on your transcript.

More tips for Juniors..

• Consider taking the PSAT to see if you will
  qualify for National Merit Scholarships. This
  will be offered at PHS on October 15th. Cost is
  15.00. Sign up with Ms. Morgan in the
  Counseling Department if you are interested by
  October 3rd.
• Continue extracurricular activities or get
  involved. Employers, Colleges, and Scholarship
  programs like to see well rounded students
  applying for their schools and for jobs.
• Take advantage of summer programs and other
  opportunities you are given. For juniors,
  Governors school, Boy or Girls State, summer
  ventures, etc. See your counselor for more
  information.

Things to look for

• Notebooks and college catalogs located in the
  bookshelves in the Counseling Department contain
  some College and Scholarship information. Most
  of this information is available on-line and can
  be accessed through computers at home or in the
  Media Center at PHS. Your teacher or counselor
  will need to provide you with a note to be able
  to use a computer in the media center.

Transcripts Recommendations

• TRANSCRIPTS
• Pick up Transcript Request Forms in the
  Counseling Center from the clear wall display
  case. You will need to complete one of these
  forms for each transcript you need.
• Complete the form (use black ink) for each
  transcript you need and give to Ms. Morgan in the
  Records Room. Turn in any secondary school forms
  or counselor recommendation forms that may be
  part of your application when you turn in your
  Transcript Request Form.
• Allow 1 week for transcript preparation. Cost
  per transcript is 1.00.
• RECOMMENDATIONS
• Complete a resume and give to your counselor to
  use in completing counselor recommendations.
• Have teachers or community members who know you
  well complete your personal recommendations.
• Allow 2-3 weeks for recommendations to be
  completed .
• Always follow up a completed recommendation
  request with a thank you note.

College Applications

• Available in the Counseling Center or Online
• Have applications in the mail or submitted by
  December 1, if possible to avoid waiting
  lists!!!!!
• Check deadlines carefully. You do not want to
  miss out on opportunities.

• Resumes
• Resumes are important for all students to develop
  regardless of course of study.
• Resumes show information about you during your
  high school years.
• Resumes should include things such as
• School Activities
• Honors/Awards
• Volunteer Work/Part-time Jobs
• Community/Church Activities
• Unique Experiences
• Resume items are not included on your
  transcript.
• Resumes should be updated regularly throughout
  your college and/or working career.

• We maintain a list of scholarships as they are

• The list is updated approximately every two
  weeks.
• Scholarship information can be found in the
  scholarship notebook or online. See the guidance
  link on the Patton High School website.

• Students may write, email or telephone for some
  scholarship information.
• Check the internet for on-line searches.
• Talk to the Financial Aid Office at the college
  you choose.
