  • or
  • 2 Major programs
  • or
  • 1 Major program 2 Minor programs
  • Tip 1 A combination of programs (bullets 2 and 3
above) must involve 12 different courses. Avoid
    too much overlap.

9
Programs of Study The Beginning
  • A program of study is a group of courses which
are thematically related. There are almost 400
    programs.
  • Examples are
  • Specialist in Employment Relations specialists
    are 9-15 courses
  • Major in Book and Media Studies majors are 6-8
    courses
  • Minor in Diaspora and Transnational Studies
    minors are 4 courses

10
Programs of Study The End
  • You must enrol in a correct combination of
programs after you pass 4.0 full courses. This is
normally at the end of your first year.
  • In March 2009, you will receive a reminder about
    selecting your programs of study.
  • It is possible to switch programs at the end of
second year or even third year.

11
How do you know what courses to take in first
year? Part 1
  • Read the full list of all Specialists, Majors and
Minors on pages 25-35 in the Registration
    Handbook and Timetable.
  • Identify programs which appear to be interesting
  • Research each of these programs in the Calendar
or in the First Year Handbook or on the U of T
website. Identify the courses you have to take in
first year in order to qualify for admission to
    these programs.
  • The more powerful the list of first year courses
the better. Have a reason for each of your
    choices.
  • Tip 1 Do read the list. There are many
interesting programs which many students dont
    know about.
  • Tip 2 Dont set out to take electives in first
    year.

12
How do I know what courses to take in first year?
Part 2
  • Be realistic about your strengths/weaknesses,
    your likes/dislikes
  • Consider what courses may be required/useful for
    admission to professional faculties, graduate
    programs or for professional qualifications
  • Consider a 199 seminar course - available only to
    first year students

13
How do I know what courses to take in first year?
Part 3
  • Read the course description in the calendar
  • Look for more detailed information on
departmental or program or course websites (Use
    the A-Z Index)
  • Check the Anti-Calendar to see if there is a
    relevant review
  • Talk to someone who has already taken the course
  • Tip 1 Some departmental sites have much more
information about courses than the calendar.
  • Tip 2 Other students are great sources of
    information. Talk to them.

14
