• Carl Rogers
• Born in 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois
• 4th of six children, a Fundamentalist Christian
  family
• Quit seminary after 20 years
• Interned at the Institute for Child Guidance
• PhD in psychology in 1931

• Believed psychoanalysis to be time consuming
  ineffective
• Taught at Ohio State U, U of Chicago U of
  Wisconsin
• Wrote more than 200 articles 15 books
• Counseling Psychotherapy 1942
• Died in 1987 at age 85

  forward-moving, constructive, realistic and
  trustworthy
• Each person is capable of finding a personal
  meaning purpose in life
• Phenomenological perspective perception of
  reality is most important

• Goal is to get ideal self real self
• Decrease the incongruities, become congruent
  (giving up roles facades)
• Trust the client to develop the agenda
