3Cover Letters
A cover letter should be the complementing piece
to your resume. In it, you should refer
specifically to the job that you are seeking, and
to the organization. Your goal should be to
convince the reader that you should be
interviewed for the position.
Step 1. Presenting your own contact information
Address Number and Street Apartment City,
Province Postal Code Date (Year, Month, Day)
4Step 2. Presenting knowledge of the organization
to which your are applying
Addressees name (Use name as in ad or contact
the company to learn preferred mode of address
and correct spelling) Addressees position or
title Company name Address Number and
Street Suite Number City, Province Postal Code
5Step 3. Selling yourself. This is going to
make up the bulk of the letter. Here is your
chance to convince them that you are the right
person for the job. Because this is a proper
letter, you must address the employer at the
begin, and sign your own name at the end. The
body text should comprise of 3 paragraphs.
Paragraph 1 State the position you are applying
for and where you heard about it. If you are
responding to a newspaper advertisement, refer to
the ad. If you were referred by someone, give the
name of that person. Try not to open your letter
with I. If possible, start with an
attention-getting fact, question about the
company, field of work, etc. (e.g., The field of
electronics is undergoing constant and rapid
change.) Let the employer see that you have done
your research by showing your knowledge of the
industry or the company.
6Paragraph 2 Show how your skills relate to this
particular employers needs and how your
experiences fit the requirements. (Refer to
specifics of the job ad, if appropriate.) Take
something from your resume (e.g., volunteer or
work experience, an award won, good academics)
and expand on it to show how skills used there
are applicable to the position you are applying
for. An anecdote or specific incident might work
well.
Paragraph 3 Ask for an interview to discuss
needs, concerns or the potential employer/client
and how you could best serve them. Make sure your
telephone number is included, the best hours to
reach you, or indicate whether you have an
answering machine. If appropriate, let the
prospective employer know you will be checking
back to set up an appointment.
7The format of the cover letter should be as
follows

Province Postal Code Date (Year, Month,
Day) Addressees name (Use name as in ad or
contact the company to learn preferred mode of
address and correct spelling) Addressees
