2 A variety of Red Cross trained disaster
response personnel and supplies are located
throughout North Carolina. However, the entire
resources of the National American Red Cross are
available when such a measure of response is
deemed necessary.. ......that measure of
response became necessary on September 16, 1999.
3 As Hurricane Floyd closed in over the
southeastern US, 2.5 million people were ordered
to evacuate the coastal areas of Florida,
Georgia, and the Carolinas. The American Red
Cross was ready to give them a safe place to
stay.
4 In one of the largest sheltering efforts in
Red Cross history, we opened nearly 1,000
shelters in 12 states which provided a safe haven
for more than 200,000 people.

6Mental Health Services Provided
Disaster Mental Health is one of the fastest
growing divisions within American Red Cross
Disaster Relief. During Floyd, more than 220
Red Cross mental health counselors helped
hundreds with feelings of depression and
hopelessness. Symptoms of flood victims ranged
from anxiety and stomach problems to nightmares.

- North Carolina has 56 Sheltee units and 7 Super

- 1 Disaster Health Ser. Kit
- 1 Child Care kit
- Tool box, fire extinguisher, wheel chair, etc.
- Each Super Sheltee contains 290 cots and blankets
only and augments a typical Sheltee unit.
The number following the word Sheltee on each
unit denotes the number of cots and blankets
onboard.
8Emergency Response Vehicles(ERV)
- ERVs provide mobile feeding capacity and work in
conjunction with either a food preparation vendor
or from an ARC, or Baptist Kitchen unit. - Regional ERV Locations

- A fully loaded ERV has 6 food Cambros
- with a 500 meal capacity.
There are approximately 325 ERVs within the ARC
Disaster inventory and all can be deployed
nationwide.
9Mobile Kitchens
These units can produce between 10,000 and 30,000
hot meals daily. Spirit of America-Roanoke,
VA Henrys Kitchen-Springfield, IL Both kitchens
have been deployed to NC on previous disaster
events
