Title: Solutions to Overcrowding at Mark Twain Elementary
1Solutions to Overcrowding at Mark Twain Elementary
- Tuesday, October 27, 2009
2What does a good solution look like?
- Maintain the integrity of the instructional
program - Maintain diversity of student population
- No drastic effect on school budget
3Current Enrollment(October27th)
4Where are we now?
- Music room is 5th grade classroom
- Music floats
- Strings on stage am/pm
- Spanish on the stage
- GT 4th and 5th in Library
- Budget is very tight-subs, extra duty pay, hourly
payroll, supplies, computer purchases, library
books, furniture
5Magellan Projection-based on current and past
programs, zone population, transfers, etc
6School Finance
- Budget is based on enrollment.
- Each student brings roughly 3300
- Magnet program is whole school-360K
- Magnet budget is an extra-5 professional
positions and parts of two others - 2009-each teacher position is about 51,000
7Potential solutions that wont happen in the
short term
- Eliminate Magnet
- Build out new classrooms
- Temporary building(s)
- Remove PPCD
8Other Factors
- New Superintendent
- New Board Member
- Funding for Magnet programs in the future
- Possible district reorganization
9Enrollment Reduction OptionsAlready in Place
- Seek out persons who are not being truthful about
addresses-(some already found) Are there more? - Severely limit other types of Transfers
(Principals Agreement, Space Available)
10Discussion of Positions
- Any position changes can most likely be absorbed
through attrition.
11Why Magnet Cant Float or be Ancillary
- Harder to showcase the Magnet program as a
definable component. - Ms Gee and Ms Diaz teach all the time.
- Ms Diazs workstation approach cant float.
- Having LDC as part of an ancillary rotation would
mean students spend less time in LDC and affect
the instruction that they could receive from Ms
Gee and Ms Diaz.
12Reduce to 5 Kinder and 5 5th Grades for 2010-11,
Cut one more class each year
13Eliminate 1 5th Grade Class, Reduce Magnet
enrollment by 5 at each grade
14End GT Pullout
15Maintain Status Quo
