7Read Aloud Activity
- Listen to the reading of the Lizard and the Sun
- Take two minutes and write your prediction or
ideas of the folktale. - Share in small groups
8Engaging your adolescent reader
- At home you can help by. . .
- Reading with your child, and have him/her point
out text features such as title, headings,
illustrations, table of content, key words, etc. - Have your adolescent make connections with things
that are familiar in their own experiences and
world events. - Expand vocabulary by making an effort to use new
and different words. Encourage research.

- At home you can help by ....
- talking about new words that your child reads
- showing your child how to figure out the words
meaning - talking to him about the meaning of the words and
sentences as you read - making connections to life experiences or other
books you have read together

- Share conversations about books, life events, and
school activities with your children over meal
times and other times together - Allow your children to express themselves
- Listen and learn from one another.
11Give your adolescent as many experiences as you
can
- Visit bookstores, libraries,
- museums, the zoo and parks
- Watch and discuss
- documentary movies
- Read and learn about
- other cultures and foreign
- lands
- Play word games

12Paired Reading/Writing
- Select a poem that is appropriate for the
interests and experiences of your child. - Read the poem aloud by taking turns, and listen
and visualize the hidden messages in the poetry. - Discuss the messages with your child. Ask
questions and make connections. - You and your child write a poem reflecting your
own thinking. - Share the poem with the family.

engage with reading?
- Have books, magazines and newspapers at home
- Allow time and space for your children to read at
home - Encourage your children to read at least 30
minutes every night - Buy books as gifts
- Be a model reader to your children
- Relate reading to everyday needs
