Faculty Use of a Tablet PC in a Hybrid Chemistry
Course Improving Asynchronous and
Synchronous Instructor/Learner Interactions

What is a hybrid course?
  • Fullerton College adopts the following
    definitions
  • Web-Enhanced All class sessions meet on campus.
    Supplemental materials such as PowerPoints,
lecture notes, websites, references are online.
Student grades arent impacted much if online
    supplements arent used.
  • Hybrid - lt 51 material of material is delivered
online. For the course to be classified as
hybrid, there is can be replacement of some of
the on-campus meetings with online materials.
However, a hybrid course doesnt necessarily
replace some of the f2f meeting times. If there
    is computer interactivity (with assessment)
modality change in material delivery such as
exams or quizzing, then the course is a hybrid
    course.
  • Online Course - gt 51 material of material is
delivered online Exams can be on campus.

3
Some Considerations for a Hybrid Chemistry Course
  • Communication with Students
  • Have you ever tried to subscript or superscript
with a mouse on a whiteboard?
  • How Much Material Goes Online?
  • How does one treat the lab component?
  • Develop Curriculum
  • Where and how does one post the material?

4
What is exciting about the Tablet PC?
  • The primary input is pen based!
  • It has handwriting recognition and conversion
    technology,
  • Wireless capability
  • Wireless to instructors station or podium
  • Introduction to wireless projectors 1 year away
  • Docking it turns it into a desktop

5
Where Does the Tablet PC Fit Into a Hybrid
Chemistry Course?
  • What makes the Tablet PC great? The Windows XP
Tablet PC running Office 2003 with inking
    capabilities
  • Great for drawing molecules
  • Great for writing chemical equations
  • Ease of subscripting and superscripting
  • Easy to grade and mark-up homework - no more
    stacks of paper!
  • Great for whiteboard during synchronous
    discussions.

6
Why not use a laptop or a Palm Pilot to develop
and deliver materials ?
  • Laptops take up too much space on a desk and even
though they are portable, arent pen based.
  • Palm Pilots require a lot of scrolling and text
is too small-hard to see. Handwriting
capabilities differ with a Palm too.

7
Hardware What I Use
  • Gateway Tablet PC by Motion Computing (not
    cheap-buy directly from Motion Computing)
  • Pentium III-M 1GHz Chip
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 40 GB Hard drive
  • 2USB Ports Internal modem
  • PCMCIA slot
  • R-W CD /DVD
  • 12.1 in Monitor/USB Keyboard
  • Basically what you get with a laptop, but lighter
    and has inking capabilities

8
Other Tablet PC contenders
  • Toshiba Protégé M200 1500-2500
  • Fujitsu Lifebook T3000 2050
  • Acer Travelmate C300 1500-2500
  • ViewSonic 2000
  • HP Compaq TC1000 2300

9
Software The Other Side of the Hybrid Course
  • WebCT as Course Management System
  • Dreamweaver MX with WebDAV to write web pages
  • Camtasia 2 to record and narrate videos
  • SnagIt Studio to capture and edit pages
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Word 2003
  • Micrograde with Webgrade to post scores online

10
About the Course
  • One 3 to 4 hour orientation
  • Meets about every other week 9 F,S meetings
Meets Friday nights from 6 pm to 9pm for Lab
    Prep
  • Meets Saturdays from 8am to 2 pm for Lab
  • Lab Practical
  • 4 Exams ACS Final

11
What I Use In Hybrid Course
  • Lots of Simulations made by others (Thanks Tom
    Greenbowe, John Gelder, and Merlot!!)
  • Zumdahl Text with WebCT drop-in
  • MCWeb for Quizzing and Tutorials
  • Powerpoint Presentations and Videos
  • Email
  • Assignment Drop Box
  • Weekly Assignments
  • Posted Announcements (with timestamp)

12
How Did They Measure Up?
  • Fall Semester Compared to the traditional
(web-enhanced) the success and retention - very
    similar.
  • Av 47/70 on ACS Final Examination
  • Retenion 73 to 75
  • Spring Semester Still about the same.
