    contents and index.
  • A database is structured as records and fields.
  • Data can be accessed by page numbers, code,
    hyperlinks, security levels.

  • Plan how you will search for the information.
  • Q. What information is required?
  • Be specific and detailed.
  • Q. Where can I get this information?
  • The Internet, specialised CDs.
  • Q. What are the best search techniques for speed,
    efficiency and accuracy.
  • Based on how the information is organised in the
    preferred method of search.

Searches
  • Encyclopaedia category browser, key words.
  • Search engine key words, refined search.
  • Subject directory subject category, list, key
    words.
  • Meta search use several search tools, limited
    number of results, flavour of what is on offer.
  • Name directories search by name, phone number
    etc.

Electronic Search Methods
  • Use lower case letters, upper only finds
    capitals.
  • Quote mark an exact phrase, this limits getting
    non related information on separate words in the
    phrase.
  • Type in a direct question for some searches.
  • Use operators such as , -, and, not.

Activity
  • Use the Internet to search for the same
    information you found in the library.
  • Use the Help feature and search Tips, and note
    any difference between different search engines.
  • Use Google, Alta-Vista, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves.
  • Note your findings and the different features of
    different engines.
  • Check your information, not all sites are correct.

  • Research and recommend a digital camera in the
    250 - 400 price range.
  • Use at least two paper based and two ICT based
    sources.
  • Keep a record of what you did to get your
    information.
