Title: Addressing Logic

1
The Fundamentals of Addressing II Rural
Addressing Systems
2
What is anAddressing System?
  • An Addressing System is an overall guideline for
assigning addresses across a broad geographic
    area.
  • The two most common addressing systems are
variants on Equal Interval and Grid addressing

3
What is Equal IntervalAddressing?
  • Equal Interval Addressing is addressing based on
linear distance driven on a specific road.
  • Low potential address on road is usually 1
  • Addresses increment by a known, set interval
(usually 100 or 1000 per mile)
  • Sometimes called odometer-based addressing or
    distance-based addressing

4
What is Equal IntervalAddressing? cont
  • EIA is appropriate for any road network but is
    recommended especially for irregular road
    networks
  • Road Names or Numbers are possible
  • Address does not convey where in county resident
is located but does convey how far along road
    resident is located
  • Generally results in lower (smaller) address
    numbers and easier-to-remember addresses

5
What is Grid Addressing?
  • Grid addressing is addressing based on a regular
grid overlaid on the county, usually following
    section lines
  • Low address per road is based on road origin
    related to position on grid
  • Addresses increment by a known interval per grid
line (usually one mile) as the crow flies, not as
    the road is driven
  • Road segments broken at grid lines as well as at
    intersections

6
What is Grid Addressing? cont
  • Grid addressing is most appropriate for a gridded
road network that is generally based on section
    line roads
  • Best with gridded road numbers/can be used with
    road names

9
Equal AddressingRoad Origins
  • Every road is assigned an origin (where low
numbers originate) based on addressing guidelines
    established for county
  • From major road to minor road
  • From south to north/west to east (or similar)
  • From closer to ZIP Code city of origin
  • From center of county outward or from chief city
    in county outward

Equal IntervalRoad Origins

Grid AddressingRoad Origins
  • The grid itself has an origin and roads take
their low/high ranges from position on the grid.
Grid origin is usually in a corner of a square
made by drawing a rectangle around the county but
can be in them middle for quadrant addressing.

Grid AddressingRoads off the Grid
  • In grid addressing, all roads must be designated
    either north/south or east/west
  • Designation can be made on rise over total length
of road OR on direction at start (low end) of
    road

What do Addresses Mean(in a true grid)
  • In true grid, road numbers are meaninful
  • Addresses interpret houses position relative to
the grid (and thus road names)
  • Oklahoma Grid System
  • Examples of addressing by the grid
  • What AddressIt is designed for
  • How AddressIt works with a grid
