MISSION STATEMENT
  • Green Barrington's mission is to act on our own
deep concerns for the current climate crisis by
implementing the resolution in Article 35, passed
at Great Barrington's annual town meeting in May,
2007, to join the Mayor's Climate Protection
    Agreement. This will entail
  • developing and implementing a local action plan
    to lower
  • Great Barrington's greenhouse emissions
  • raising public awareness of causes of and
    solutions to the
  • current climate crisis
  • partnering with others to find and implement
    local solution

Idle Free GB
  • Idling is leaving your engine running while
your car is not moving. Common reasons for
idling include waiting for someone or warming up
    the car.

4
The Goal of Idle-Free GB
  • To promote cleaner, healthier air to benefit
citizens, visitors, and the global environment by
encouraging drivers to turn off their engines
    when parked or stopped.

5
How to Reach the Goal
  • A broad-based public awareness campaign on
    the health, environmental, economic and
    vehicle-life span benefits of reducing
    unnecessary engine idling targeting
  • Bus Drivers and Companies
  • Parents
  • New Drivers
  • Business Owners
  • Town Officials
  • ALL THE REST OF US

8
Who says Idling is problem?
  • The state, the DEP, and the American Lung
    Association
  • Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L. Ch. 90, Sect.
    16A)
  • DEP Regulation (310 CMR 7.11)

9
Myth 1 The engine should be warmed up before
driving.
  • Reality
  • Idling is not an effective way to warm up your
    vehicle.
  • Driving your vehicle is the best way to warm it
    up.
  • 30 seconds of warming up your vehicle on winter
    days is enough.

10
Myth 2 Idling is good for your engine.
  • Reality
  • Excessive idling can
  • damage your engine
  • components,
  • including cylinders,
  • spark plugs and the
  • exhaust system.

11
Myth 3 Shutting off and restarting is hard on
the engine and uses more gas.
  • Reality
  • Frequent restarting has little impact on engine
    components.
  • More than 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel
    than restarting the engine.

12
But, I thought.
  • The electronic ignition changed everything!
  • The battery
  • The starter
  • The gas usage
