3
Standards
  • Kindergarten
  • K.8 The student will identify the instruments
used to measure length (ruler), weight (scale),
time (clock digital and analog calendar day,
    month, and season), and temperature
    (thermometer).
  • K.9 The student will tell time to the hour,
using an analog or digital clock.

4
Standards
  • First Grade
  • 1.11 The student will tell time to the
half-hour, using an analog or digital clock.
  • Second Grade
  • 2.16 The student will tell and write time to the
quarter hour, using analog and digital clocks.

5
Objectives
  • Students will be able to determine the
    appropriate time through childrens literacy,
using their individual clocks and completion of a
    worksheet with a partner.

6
Content
  • Ask students to raise their hands and choose one
to tell you what time it is. This allows you to
see who has a concept of time.
  • Regardless of the childs right or wrong answer,
explain the importance of understanding the parts
of the clock. Review these parts and model if
    necessary.

7
Content
  • Individual clocks are handed out to each child.
  • Explain to the students that you will be reading
The Grouchy Ladybug, by Erik Carle, and as they
hear a time, create that time on their individual
clocks and hold them up in the air to show that
    they are finished.

8
Content
  • Once most everyone has their clock in the air,
model the time on the large clock for the
children to see if their answer was right.
  • Once the book is finished, review the schedule
for one day of the week. Model these times on
the model clock. For example Monday school
begins at (815am) and place the hands on the
    appropriate digits on the clock.

9
Assessment
  • Give children a worksheet with a random schedule
for the day. Also give them an sheet of empty
clocks to draw the small and big hands on,
according to the schedule they are given.
  • Have the children work in pairs to complete this
activity. Invite them to use their individual
    clocks if need be.

10
Assessment
  • Remind students that the sheets will be taken up,
only one per pair. These will be evaluated on
according to the amount of clocks they completed
  • 4 correct clocks smiley face.
  • 3 correct clocks a check
  • 2 or fewer correct clocks asked to do over.
