OBJECTIVES
  • Describe the economic importance of the Broiler
    Industry.
  • Explain contracting procedures.
  • Identify the housing and equipment required.
  • Identify management procedures.

3
Poultry is a big money-making industry for the
state of Georgia.
  • A heated bus brings in 60,000 chicks. There are
100 chicks in each of the plastic crates.

4
In the United States, the Broiler Industry has
continually increased production in the last 10
years.

CONTRACTING PROCEDURES HOW DOES A FARMER
DECIDE WHO WILL SUPPLY THEM WITH THEIR BABY
CHICKS?
9
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE
NAMES OF CHICKEN COMPANIES
THAT YOU KNOW?
10
THESE ARE SOME OF THE MAIN
INTEGRATORS
CON-AGRA GOLDKIST HARRISON MARJAC
SEABOARD
These are just a few of the main integrators.
There are many other companies that do the same
things these companies do. They are simply not
as big, but no less profitable.
11
BASIC STEPS TO STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS
  • 1st- Find an integrator you will be happiest with
    and sign a CONTRACT.
  • 2nd- Find a bank that will give you a LOAN to
    build your houses.
  • 3rd- Build your chicken houses.
  • 4th- Contact integrator to supply feed, chicks,
    and other necessities.

12
Whats important to remember, is that once you
decide on an integrator, you will work with that
one business exclusively. They will supply
all of your chicks, and their feed, and they will
pick up the chicks when they have reached their
weight (usually 7 to 8 weeks).
13
HOUSING AND EQUIPMENT NEEDS FOR
THE BROILER INDUSTRY
The poultry house is the main expense of the
chicken business. This farm has 3 chicken houses
that are 400 feet long.
14
OTHER EQUIPMENT NEEDED
Propane Gas Heaters
Main Control Systems Center
Large End and Side Fans
15
OTHER EQUIPMENT
Fresh paper and shavings
Feed hoppers
Center ceiling fan
16
MORE EQUIPMENT AND OTHER MATERIALS
A tractor is necessary for cleaning out the
chicken house and for backing in the trailor to
bring in the chicks.
17
MANAGEMENT PROCEDURES
In the Poultry business there are certain things
to be done at certain times. There can also be
problems that will need immediate attention.
When the chicks are first delivered, the water
and feed lines are lowered all the way down to
the ground. The lines must also be raised daily
as the chicks grow.
18
PROBLEMS TO WATCH FOR
The snow and ice storm can bring a beautiful
site, but it can also bring problems.
As the ice melts over the next 3 days, standing
water becomes a problem (disease).
19
PROBLEMS TO WATCH FOR
We ended up having to dismantle the feed hopper
to find the problem (auger slipped).
The pile of feed on the ground tells us there is
a break in the feed line.
The chickens proved to be of little help.
20
OTHER PROCEDURES
The flock must be vaccinated twice during their
grow-out time. It is done through the water
lines.
21
OTHER PROCEDURES
5-gallon buckets are used to catch the over-flow
of water and vaccine.
As soon as the clear water turns blue, we know we
have vaccine in the lines. We will lower the
lines for the chicks to drink.
22
FINISHING THE JOB
Finishing out your first flock can be a very
rewarding experience. These birds are on their
way out tonight.
23
FINISHING THE JOB
The pick-up is usually a night duty. The trucks
arrive around 3 a.m. and will not be finished
until 9 a.m. or later.
This company brought about 15 men to do the job.
24
REVIEW OF THE BROILER INDUSTRY
From one day to seven and a half weeks.
25
REVIEW
  • The poultry business is a big money-making
industry for the State of Georgia.
  • A contract must be made first with an integrator
before a bank will loan money for the
    construction of chicken houses.
  • Being able to maintain your own equipment in the
chicken house is vital to the success of a flock.
