His father Bill Gates Jr. worked for a law firm
and his mother, Mary, taught school until they
started their family. Has an older sister Kristan

his peer's abilities in nearly all subjects,
especially math and science. His parents enrolled
him in Lakeside, a private school known for

4 1973- Entered Harvard University
Developed a version of the programming language
BASIC for the first microcomputer - the MITS
Altair.

51975- Left Harvard to focus energy on Microsoft,
a company he founded at age 19 with friend Paul
Allen. Believed that the computer would be a val
uable tool on every office desktop and in every
home, they began developing software for personal
computers.

6 Within a few years Microsoft had made a name for
itself with their operating systems.
Microsoft's earliest success came in 1981 with
the MS-DOS operating system which is still used
today.

7 In 1986, when the company went public, Bill
became an instant billionaire.
1987- Introduced their first version of Windows.
Microsoft decided to concentrateon the software
market, adding consumer applications like
Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

8 On January 1, 1994, married Melinda French, a
marketing executive at Microsoft.
Has three children Jennifer Katharine born in
1996, Rory born in 1999, and Phoebe born in
2002.

9 1995- U.S. District Court issued a preliminary
decision that Microsoft was a monopoly, signaling
trouble for the corporation. Shortly after, Gate
s stepped down as CEO and assumed the position of
chairman and chief software architect.
