1
MCS Final Project
  • News Segment Analysis
  • Meredith Wise
  • October 2009

2
News Segment
  • Channel One segment, Kid Flicks

3
The Lead
  • Dont let the stacks of DVDs fool you. Marni
and Bertie Berna arent your typical movie fans.

4
Who?
  • Included in the lead of the story Marni and
Bertie Berna, sisters, ages 15 and 17

5
What?
  • VO This is the home base for Kid Flicks, a
non-profit started by Marni and Berni. Mission
to collect and send DVDs to children in
hospitals and it all began with a sick friend.

6
Why?
  • MARNI I had a friend who was sick in Ceasar
Hospital with leukemia and while she was there
she watched movies all of the time. So we decided
to donate movies to the hospital that she had
been at while she was sick.

7
When and Where?
  • VO Soon family and friends got involved. Six
years later Kid Flicks now ships movies to
childrens hopsitals in all fifty states and
    South Africa.

8
How?
  • VO Unlike video stores and theaters. Kid Flicks
brings movies directly to patients, one hundred
DVDs at a time. Many come from movie studios and
donations from other young people like Marni and
    Barni.

9
Code of Ethics - Fairness
  • GOOD - Exercise special care when children are
involved in a story and give children greater
    privacy protection than adults.
  • Sensitive to health care privacy, especially that
of minors. Did not show any kids sick in
    hospital.

10
Code of Ethics - Fairness
  • ROOM TO IMPROVE - Present a diversity of
expressions, opinions, and ideas in context.
  • Could have interviewed those receiving DVD
donations such as a nurse or even a parent of a
    child in the hospital.
