i-Bench
  • Instruction in Basic Equipment Needed for
    Chemistry Biology

2
Overview
A MITC proposal for funding to develop a series
of electronic, self paced modules designed to
guide students through basic concepts related to
biology and chemistry laboratory practices.
3
Goals
  • Provide basic information and applications of
    biology/chemistry lab equipment
  • Interactivity through quiz and applications,
    feedback throughout modules
  • Accessible outside of class/lab time
  • Familiarize students (through virtual practice)
with lab equipment prior to class, minimizing
equipment lessons and maximizing lab time for
    application
  • Build student confidence on equipment usage
  • Reduce errors (and save related to errors)
  • Increase safety awareness

4
Goals, cont.
  • Standardize instruction, thus standardizing
    equipment usage
  • Provide visibility to equipment
  • Individual views are more effective than showing
one object to a class of 15-20 students
  • Provide opportunities for review just in time
  • Provide immediate and relevant feedback, thus
    increasing learning
  • Improve skills on and knowledge of equipment
