• Get rid of classes
• Strong Government control

II. Reactions of Red Scare

• Palmer Raids
• Raids on several factories that were owned by
  communists
• Led by A. Mitchell Palmer- Atty General
• 250 deported, 4,000 arrested
• Detained in horrible conditions.
• -Some committed suicide.

III. Sacco Vanzetti

• Italian immigrants accused of robbing a factory
  and killing 1 man
• No evidence against them, but they were convicted
  anyway
• Sentenced put to death pardoned later
• Judge was a bigot.

IV. New Industry

• Ford Cars- Assembly lines
• Much quicker production cheaper cars
• Cheap enough for most who work can buy
• Leads to other industries
• Rubber Roads
• Steel Petroleum
• Gas Stations Service Stations
• Leads to Suburbs- communities on the outskirts
  of cities. Why?

• Following W.W. I, there were problems in the
  factories
• 1. Conflict for jobs.
• -Black vs. White
• Racial conflicts
• Marcus Garvey
• -Veterans vs. Non-Veterans

• -Seattle-City wide strike
• -Boston-Police go on strike
• -Steel Coal Industries
• few gains were made by workers
• Welfare Capitalism-program installed to convince
  workers that they did not need a Union.

Welfare Capitalism

• Improved working conditions
• Company doctors
• Eye Dental care
• Cheaper gas for employees
• Sports teams (Ft. Wayne Pistons)
• Union membership was very low at this time.

• Americans had new toys
• -Refrigerator
• -Vacuum Cleaners
• -Radio- Connected the world
• -Air Travel- Horrible
• Led to buying on credit-sometimes bad.

• 1. Harding- Scandalous
• -Biggest was Teapot Dome- Albert Fall took
  bribes to allow oil companies to drill in Nat.
  Park. Jailed for it.
• -Ohio Gang- Friends from Ohio that he put in
  power. Many were arrested for taking bribes.

• More business, less government
• Although popular, does not run in 1928

Post W.W. I Effects

• War Debt- Germany owed tons of money to Europe
  (who owed U.S.)
• Dawes Plan- U.S. loaned money to Germany who
  paid back Europe who paid back U.S.
• Did this to prevent war again.

Washington Naval Conference

• U.S. concerned about growing navies and weapons
  around the world
• Held a conference to reduce arms race
• Very successful. Some countries even stopped
  building ships

Kellogg-Briand Pact

• Agreement between 60 countries who all agreed to
  not go to war with each other.
• Very little stopping countries from going to war.
