Title: Investigating My Place Year 7 Geography Fieldwork
1Investigating My Place Year 7 Geography
Fieldwork
2Project learning objectives
- Know how to describe the site and situation of a
location and describe the methodology of a field
investigation. - 2) Understand how the regeneration scheme may
have created both problems and benefits - 3) To be able to evaluate the success of the
scheme.
3L6
SOME of you will ALSO be able to evaluate the
success of the regeneration and explain your
ideas (synthesis) for an improved future for the
area for all members of the local community in a
structured letter to the local council.
MOST of you will ALSO understand that the
regeneration may have strengths and weaknesses
and you give simple reasons for how the area may
be improved.

ALL of you will be able to describe the site and
situation of Balderton Lake, carry out
geographical fieldwork and describe your
methodology, and give simple reasons for why you
think the regeneration project was successful.
4Background
- In 1996 the former Balderton gravel pit was
infilled to create land for new housing with the
remaining area filled with water to create
Balderton Lake. -
- The gravel pit was approximately twice the size
of the current lake. - The lake and the surrounding area are now used by
the local community for fishing and recreation.
5Student Research
- Wooded area surrounds the lake.
- Houses now built on the former gravel pit.
- There is still quarrying equipment at the bottom
of the lake as it is too expensive to remove. - Trees were planted by students at John Hunt
Primary. - Owned by Balderton Parish Council (brought for
30,000) - Originally known as Blue Lake.
- Limestone surface walks around the lake.
- Bottom of Grove Street used to be quick sand!!
- Little disabled access.
- One person goes around the lake each day to check
the lifebelts are present.
6Student Research (cont)
- Cycling path and walking path around the lake.
- Land use houses, grassland and woodland.
- Trainline was next the site as it was easy to
move gravel by rail. - A man drowned in the lake.
- There is a little island in the lake which you
can walk through the water to. - Pontoon was sunk in the lake when the gravel
company was finished. - When the gravel was exhausted, part of the site
was used for tipping. - The lake and the associated land are
approximately 22 acres. - The lake has a strong undercurrent.
- The gravel was called Hovering Gravel, which was
extracted in the 60s and 70s. - Disused train track next to the site.
- Land was sold to the Quibell family in 1932.
7Why investigate Balderton Lake?
- Its a local issue studying it will help you to
understand your local environment. - It will enable you to develop Geographical Skills
early in Y7 vital for KS3 and beyond! - It links closely to Citizenship (empathy for your
local area), Science (environmental enquiry) and
English (explaining your viewpoints)! - Fieldtrips in Geography are great fun as well as
brilliant out of classroom learning experiences!
8Aim
- The aim of this investigation is to answer the
question - Has the regeneration of Balderton gravel pit
been successful? - Note how this question allows you to give a yes
or no answer! You can use your own viewpoints
from the investigation to do this!
9Use 5 adjectives to describe an image of the
former gravel pit
10Introduction
- Describe the site and situation of Balderton
Lake. Say what human and physical features
surround the lake. - Describe how the area appeared before it was
regenerated. - Describe how the lake is used by the local
community as an area for recreation.
11(No Transcript)
12Methods
- Explain how you will collect the information for
each method you will use on your fieldtrip. - Use the example below to help you
- In order to collect information for my bi-polar
analysis method, I will sample the environmental
quality at 5 sites around the lake using a
grading system of 3 (very good) to -3 (very
poor).
13Results
- Your results should be presented in the following
5 ways - Located bi-polar analysis bar chart on a map of
Balderton Lake. - Pie charts/bar graphs showing the contents of
each of your quadrats. - An annotated (labelled) field sketch of an area
around the lake. - Labelled photographs from areas around the lake.
- Located observational notes written on your map
of the lake.
14Analysis
- Say what each of your results tell you about the
environmental quality of the lake. Choose at
least three bits of information from each of your
results to do this. - Say what your results from each method tell you
about your aim. For example - This tells me that the regeneration of
Balderton gravel pit been successful since the
area is used by lots of the local community yet
there is very little litter around the lake and
no vandalism at all.
15Outcomes
Evaluate the success of the regeneration and
explain your ideas for an improved future for the
area for all members of the local community in a
structured letter to Balderton Parish Council.
L6
Describe 5 success of the regeneration scheme and
give 5 areas for development.
L5
Give 4 reasons why you think the regeneration
project was successful.
