8John Nabors goal setting story
- John was inspired by Mark Spitzs seven swimming
gold medals in the 1972 Olympics, John set a long
term goal (outcome or end goal) to win 100m
backstroke in 1976. - He estimated that the world record time would be
required and set this as his performance goal
which meant a huge five second improvement - John divided the five second deficit by the
number of hours of training over four years. He
found it was 1/5 of an eye blink per hour of
training which he deemed possible with hard and
smart training (short term goals) - John won the gold in both the 100 metres
(world record) and 200 metres in 1976.

in 12 months time, ensuring it - will make a real impact on your performance
- is realistic but challenging
- is in line with your goal and priorities

- think of people to support
- assess level of commitment to do it honestly.
